Pearls are a classic, beautiful accessory that combine a sense of regality with versatility. Though it can perfectly dress up an otherwise ordinary outfit, pearl jewelry isn’t something you need to reserve for fancy occasions alone.

We love pearls with a black dress (à la Breakfast at Tiffany’s) as much as we love them with a blouse and blue jeans. They also coordinate well with other jewelry and can work with a more subtle style or one with ribbons and lace. Learn more about pearls here, and read below to discover how to style pearls for any occasion.

Elevated Weekend Wear

Amp up a comfortable weekend outfit with pearl accents. Pair your pearls with jeans and a sweater for a soft look to grab brunch or run errands. We recommend subtle colors for your clothing, such as light pink or beige, to keep things sweet and simple. Add a bit of beauty with an accessory like this Cultured Freshwater Pearl Bracelet. You can admire the pearl bracelet on your wrist while sipping a steamy cup of coffee or getting a fresh coat of shiny polish on your nails.

Opt for a bohemian blouse and these Baroque Freshwater Pearl Earrings for an artistic, carefree vibe at the farmers market or on a thrift-shopping spree. Pearls may be classic, but they cater just as much to an eccentric style as they do a buttoned-up one. Pearls add a sense of charm to your outfit while showing off an elegant yet creative spirit.

Classic Corporate Chic

While we advocate for pearls on the weekends, we also recommend wearing them any day of the week! Pearl strands are a great way to pull a corporate ensemble together in a seemingly effortless way. Pair a blazer with jeans or trousers and a simple white tee with a silky strand of pearls. The white-on-white will help avoid overly dramatic contrast, and the pearls will add a touch of elegance that softens the more structured features of business wear. Add heels for a confidence boost and a professional edge.

Another way to elevate a timeless work outfit is to pair a neutral, plain top with black pants and a pearl necklace, like this Cultured Freshwater Pearl Strand. The pearls instantly take minimalism from basic to beautiful. Add black flats and simply styled hair for consistency.

Romantic Date Night

You want to feel your best on date night, whether that means a little black dress or a trendy new outfit. Wear pearls for a tried-and-true method of looking fresh and pretty, but mix in a variety of other metal jewelry to avoid looking too formal. We like a classic, well-fitted dress with these Cultured Freshwater Solitaire Earrings to appear put-together without being over the top.

If your date or night out on the town is more casual, try a skirt, heels, a tee or sweater (depending on the weather), and pearl earrings for a breezy, becoming look. For a vintage flourish, pair pearls with a bold red lipstick.

Elegant Wedding Guest

You can wear white to a wedding when it comes to pearls! In fact, they are exceptionally exquisite with a velvety winter dress, black-tie attire, or a summer sundress. These Cultured Akoya Pearl and Natural Diamond Earrings pair perfectly with a sleek, earth-toned gown for a stunning, yet subtle, look at a nighttime or formal wedding. If you have long hair, wear it in an updo to show off your pearl earrings.

This Cultured Freshwater Pearl Pendant looks excellent with a deep V-neck or a dress with a simple neckline. It adds a dainty touch that leaves you looking both fashionable and dignified. Complete your look with stud earrings and romantic makeup and you’ll be the best-dressed guest.

Timeless Travel Style

Stay classic in any city with pearls as your traveling companion! Pearls go with everything, so they’re the perfect accessory to bring on a trip. Plus, they’re often a little bigger than other gemstones and harder to lose, so they make for easy packing. We like this Cultured Pearl Paperclip Necklace for a beautiful, stylish take on pearls that’s a little less formal yet still absolutely gorgeous. For a preppy, traditional style that looks good anywhere, pair pearls with plaids, collared shirts, loafers, and cardigans.

Combine your pearls with leather for an edgier look. A black leather jacket and jeans or leather pants with a feminine blouse and pearls give you a charming blend of daring meets delicate. When you’re traveling, you’re likely to take a lot of photos, so you want to look your best!

It’s easy to pull off pearls no matter where you are or what you’re doing. Pearls go with everything and look good on everybody. To enhance your jewelry wardrobe, shop cultured pearls at Shane Co. We offer gorgeous, elegant styles that add a sophisticated twist to your everyday look.

Pantone Color of the Year 2023

2023 is here and it’s going to be the boldest, most creative year yet. What better way to signify this moment in history than with a color that’s full of life, red-hot passion, and fun? This year, the Pantone Color Institute chose Viva Magenta to be its annual Color of the Year.

This color is carefully selected by a team to influence consumer product decisions and client designs around the world. Let’s dive into everything we know about Viva Magenta and what it means for the jewelry and style selections that are going to shape 2023.

The History of Pantone and Color

The Pantone Color Institute™ is a Pantone consulting service. Color experts from the Institute explore worldwide influences and trendsetting tones and select the one they feel will define the year in terms of branding, marketing, and creativity.

In 1963, Pantone released the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM® that revolutionized the printing industry and created a universal system for color consistency. Decades later, in the year 2000, the company solidified itself as the go-to on color trends with the first Pantone Color of the Year.

Magenta Flora

Color of the Year 2023: Viva Magenta

A color that falls on the spectrum somewhere between red and pink, light and dark, and intense and dull, Viva Magenta uniquely captures a pleasing hue that offers many qualities. Pantone describes it as “vibrating with vim and vigor,” and it’s said to represent strength, joy, and self-expression. We’re totally on board with those descriptions being our mantra this year!

Viva Magenta is inspired by the red of cochineal, a precious natural dye. It’s meant to remind us of the beauty in nature in an increasingly technological world. With its standout tone and one-of-a-kind origin, Viva Magenta empowers people to write their own narrative this year.

Viva Magenta Jewelry at Shane Co.

Ready to showcase your fearless side this year with a pop of Viva Magenta? Tourmaline, one of the beautiful colorful gemstones we offer at Shane Co., is a great way to add the bright hue to your wardrobe as a constant reminder of your internal strength. There are also a couple of other colorful gemstones, mentioned below, that pair well with tourmaline and can help complete the perfect Viva Magenta color scheme look.

Elara Pink Tourmaline and Diamond Ring

This gorgeous ring is going to stun in 2023 and beyond with its impressive magenta color. Available in white gold or yellow gold, the center stone is surrounded by dazzling accent diamonds. Shop this ring for a bold new look!

Cherry Pink Tourmaline Link Bracelet

One oval pink tourmaline gemstone takes center stage on this rose gold bracelet. Wear this on your wrist to emanate a pink, passionate vibe while celebrating yourself this year!

Mosaic Pink Sapphire and Diamond Earrings

These shimmering earrings are another great way to add a whole range of pinks to your Viva Magenta-inspired style. Crafted from rose gold, they feature 100 round pink sapphires and 18 round diamonds. Talk about pretty in pink!

Thea Ruby, Pink Sapphire, and Diamond Stackable Ring

Rock a monochromatic look with more shades of pink and red that complement tourmaline by wearing this rose gold ring. It features four round rubies, three round pink sapphires, and 10 round diamonds. Plus, the rose gold setting adds a warm touch that further brings out the tones of the stones.

How to Wear Viva Magenta

In addition to jewelry, there’s more you can add to your wardrobe to amp it up with Viva Magenta. According to Sarah Ryan The Style Coach, Viva Magenta works well with complementary colors on the color wheel, like the lime green shade that sits directly opposite magenta (a cool combination found in this bracelet). She also recommends an analogous look, meaning colors that are beside each other on the wheel, like orange red and a cooler pink.

Pantone Color Cards

We also love the idea of wearing a mostly neutral (especially lighter tones like beige and white) outfit and adding a bold pop of Viva Magenta, whether it’s with jewelry, shoes, a bag, or a top underneath a jacket. This allows the color to really stand out on its own. Oh, and, of course, you can’t go wrong with matching Viva Magenta lipstick!

This year is all about taking chances and being the boldest, brightest version of yourself. Try incorporating Viva Magenta into your life with jewelry that makes you feel like you can handle anything in 2023. You’ve got this! If you want to keep searching for the perfect Viva Magenta piece, explore all tourmaline jewelry at Shane Co. or visit a store near you today.

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, director Hans Canosa’s film based on the novel by Gabrielle Zevin, is the tale of a man whose life changes when new relationships — both paternal and romantic — upturn his previously lackluster (and comically grumpy) routine. As a bookstore owner, his fondness of stories bonds him with his new love interest and opens the door to a brighter future and fuller life. Our favorite part? Two Shane Co. rings make their film debut, shining brightly alongside seasoned movie stars.

Amelia, portrayed by Lucy Hale, and Ismay, portrayed by Christina Hendricks, take center stage as two women who play integral roles in A.J.’s life. Amelia is a kind book rep who reminds A.J. what it’s like to be in love after the death of his wife. Ismay is A.J.’s former wife’s sister, a beautiful woman with a troubling secret. Both women have unique styles in the movie that reflect their personalities. See Shane Co.’s two featured rings below that capture the essence of each woman.

Cultured Akoya Pearl and Diamond Ring

Amelia wears this stunning ring after A.J. proposes to her. It perfectly suits her personal style, which can be described as “coastal chic,” as the movie takes place on the fictional Alice Island in Massachusetts. This pearl ring speaks to the seaside setting and the subtle elegance Amelia carries with her. Pair with pearl studs for a lovely look we think Amelia would appreciate.

Tahoe London Blue Topaz Ring

Ismay can be seen wearing this ring, which complements her New England English teacher vibe. She is often seen in plaids, camel tones, turtlenecks, and blues that pair well with her red hair. This London blue topaz ring is a perfect standout piece for her classic style and bold beauty. Shop the Tahoe London Blue Topaz Pendant to complete your look. While not featured in the film, we think Ismay would have loved this necklace to pair with her ring.

We love the cozy charm of this movie, as well as its sense of mystery and fulfilling family scenes. It makes you want to curl up in a beautiful small-town bookstore, take long walks by the ocean, and wear jewelry that reflects the scenery all around it. Shop these two Shane Co. rings to romanticize your own storied life.

Explore all rings at Shane Co. to create another film-worthy fashion moment. With our Free Lifetime Warranty, we’re your partners for life with free maintenance, repair, cleaning, and more. As a family-owned, renowned business in the industry, we promise to be your trusted jeweler and friend in the jewelry business.

Happy birthday, October babies! We have a gorgeous selection of opal and tourmaline to represent the official October birthstones. Beautiful, iridescent opal and vibrant, stunning tourmaline highlight the natural gemstones that make this month so special. Read on to find out more and shop all our favorite birthstone gifts.

Opal

Formed from silica and water, gorgeous opal is found in the cracks and crevices of rock deposits. It’s amorphous, which means it doesn’t have a defined structure — meaning that it takes on many colors and qualities. This makes each opal piece unique and special to the wearer.

Spiritual meaning

It’s said that opal can help spark creativity in its wearers, making it the perfect stone for lovers of art and culture. It is also a symbol of hope, purity, and truth in some European cultures.

Did you know?

With 95% of the world’s precious opals coming from Australia, opal is actually the national gemstone of the country. Indigenous Australian myths link the creation of opal to rainbows because of its colorful appearance.

Opal gifts

Our Celia Opal Pendant is the perfect way to celebrate an October birthday! Highlighting the natural beauty of opal, this pendant is set in our signature shade of 14k rose gold, creating a one-of-a-kind look.

Looking for more sparkle? These Juliet Opal and Diamond Earrings add a touch of elegance to any outfit. With 24 beautiful round diamonds surrounding two opals in a unique design, you’ll never want to take these earrings off!

Tourmaline

Gorgeous tourmaline is October’s birthstone, in addition to opal. Tourmaline is made up of a variety of mineral elements, making it especially unique because of its ability to come in a wide variety of colors. The composition of tourmaline directly affects its physical appearance — more or less inclusion of certain minerals make it appear wildly different to the naked eye.

Spiritual meaning

Tourmaline is believed to promote inspiration and happiness, as well as build self-confidence among its wearers, making it a great gemstone to wear on a daily basis! It’s known as a protective stone, keeping its wearers safe from harmful energy and bringing forth positive vibes.

Did you know?

Up until the 1800s, tourmaline was often mistaken for other stones because of its wide variety of colors. The Spanish explorer who first discovered tourmaline even actually assumed it was an emerald!

Tourmaline gifts

We carry a number of beautiful and unique tourmaline jewelry gifts for October babies! Here are a few of our favorites:

This Cherry Pink Tourmaline Necklace is as sweet as its name implies! Featuring one oval pink tourmaline gemstone, the rose gold setting adds a touch of vintage flair to a stunning necklace.

For an extra-special birthday, add this Cherry Pink Tourmaline Link Ring to your set! With our signature shade of 14k rose gold link detailing, the center pink tourmaline shines extra bright in this sophisticated ring.

It’s almost August, and that means it’s time for another deep dive on this month’s birthstone. Luckily for us, that means exploring the birthstone for August, beautiful green peridot – its history, meaning and all of our favorite styles to gift for August babies.

What is the August birthstone?

Emerald shaped Peridot and Diamond necklace and matching earrings.

While August actually has a few stones associated with it, the most popular August birthstone is peridot. This bright green gem forms deep inside the earth’s mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanoes, sometimes even being found in meteorites. Unlike many other gemstones, its color comes from the composition of the mineral itself, instead of impurities. For this reason, its shades can vary from bright lime green to brownish-green. The amount of iron present in the composition of the stone dictates the brightness of the gem’s color. Peridot is sometimes referred to as the “Evening Emerald” because its green hue looks beautiful any time of day.

With a 6.5-7 rating on the Mohs scale of hardness, raw peridot can be prone to cracking; however, the finished gemstone is easy to wear and quite strong.

History of peridot

Pliny the Elder was an ancient naturalist living during the years 23-79 A.D. He first recorded the existence of the stone on a small island off the coast of Egypt. These early gemstones came from deposits on a small volcanic island in the red sea called Topazios. For this reason, early peridot was sometimes confused with the gem topaz.

Ancient Egyptians called peridot the “gem of the sun” and believed it protected its wearers from terrors occurring during the night. After building in popularity among the Egyptians, peridot saw a revival in the 1990s when deposits producing very fine grades of the gem were discovered in Pakistan.

Today, peridot is mined across the world, including in the United States. Some of the places you can find this green gemstone include Arkansas, Arizona, Hawaii, Australia, Kenya, China, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and more. In fact, at the turn of the 20th century, geologists were stumbling upon so many samples of peridot that they came up with a theory that beneath the earth’s core there was an “olivine layer” of rock. However, this theory is yet to be substantiated.

Cluster style peridot ring and matching necklace.

Did you know?

Peridot is extremely popular among British royals. King Edward VII declared it his favorite gemstone, while Princess Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, favors a pair of peridot, blue topaz and diamond earrings.

Spiritual associations

Peridot has long been associated with certain spiritual meanings. Early Christians actually considered this stone sacred, and Catholic bishops today still wear peridot and amethyst rings to symbolize purity. In other cultures, it’s associated with harmony, good health, restful sleep, peacefulness and compassion, as well as believed to free the mind of envious thoughts.

Priests believed it was connected to nature and used goblets covered in the stone to speak with nature gods. In Hawaii, peridot once symbolized the tears of Pele, the volcano goddess of fire who controlled the flow of lava. Some believe the name for the stone is rooted in the Greek word “peridona,” meaning “giving plenty,” which is why it is often associated with generosity as well.

Did you know?

Some historians believe Cleopatra’s famed emerald collection may have actually been peridot. Throughout medieval times, the two gems were often mistaken for one another, especially before the awareness of peridot began to grow.

All-gold jewelry

All-gold jewelry, especially yellow gold, is having a major moment right now. Whether you’re layering, mixing metal types, or just wearing a favorite style on its own, there are so many ways to wear gold jewelry.

Keep reading for a few gold styling ideas!

Layered Necklaces

Three layered gold necklaces

Probably the most popular styling trend we’re seeing out there involves layered necklaces. Choose different lengths, weights, and charms for a dynamic look. We like this combo because it feels super personal, with an initial and an engravable. We have other options too, like a Zodiac sign or Saint Christopher pendant. Another way to style gold is to choose one statement chain, like a paperclip chain. Or, pair a gold chain with a pearl necklace.

Stacked Bracelets

Bracelet stack with gold and pearls

Whether wearing gold beads or a tennis bracelet, we love a good stack. You can always start with one and then build your collection as you go. Why not treat yourself when you hit a milestone? (Not that you need an excuse to add to cart!) For a little extra sparkle, choose styles with diamond accents.

Delight In the Details

Up close shot of a gold earring

We’re here for classic gold hoop earrings, but also for unique details. The floral pattern on our Valencia Geometric Hoop Earrings will polish off any look. You can wear it with layered gold chains (as described earlier). Or, another option is to wear gold hoops or studs and, if you have more than one piercing, pair them with diamond studs or pearls.

Ready for a jewelry refresh? Shane Co. has the widest selection of gold jewelry options you’ll find. Shop all our gold jewelry – bracelets, earrings, rings, and necklaces – in14k yellow, white, and rose gold.

Learn more about this gem and browse some of our most popular ruby birthstone jewelry on the Shane Co. blog.

What are rubies?

Rubies are the red variety of the mineral corundum, which you might recognize as the mineral sapphire is made of, too. In fact, all colored corundum is considered a sapphire except for this particular gem. This red stone gets its color from the element chromium, and when treated to extreme heat and pressure over millions of years, crystals are formed under the earth’s surface. The presence of silica or iron, two minerals that are extremely common within the earth’s crust, will prevent the formation of ruby, making them one of the rarest stones known to man. Scientists have said that it’s a “minor geological miracle” that they’re formed at all — we’re actually still unsure how the exact conditions are met.

Did you know?

Besides being our July birthstone and a beautiful choice for Valentine’s Day jewelry, ruby is also the stone for the 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries.

Gem qualities

Their formation is not the only thing that makes this special stone so unique. The chromium that gives rubies their red color can cause fluorescence, which causes them to appear to glow like a fire from the inside out. However, chromium can also cause cracks and fissures, so few grow large enough to crystallize into gem-quality stones — another reason why they’re so rare. Despite this, rubies are durable, rating a 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness, second only to diamond. This strength and fluorescence means the gem has uses beyond just jewelry; it’s also used to create watches, medical instruments and even lasers.

Myanmar (formerly Burma) is famous for its ruby deposits, producing deep red stones that are known as “Pigeon’s blood.” Other deposits exist in Vietnam, Thailand, East Africa, India, parts of the Middle East and even certain areas of the United States. Thailand is today’s main source and produces gems of a dark red shade.

Did you know?

The first ever laser was created in 1960 using the red fluorescence emitted by a ruby crystal.

Myths and symbolism

There are a variety of myths and legends associated with the ruby, particularly because of its unique red color. In the Orient, this stone was described as a “drop of the heart’s blood of Mother Earth,” while other ancient cultures believed that they grew on trees like fruit, starting off as small white stones and ripening in the sun to the red gem we know today. In the Middle Ages, these gems were viewed as a stone of prophecy, as well as having a number of purported health benefits. Ivan the Terrible of Russia stated that rubies were good for the heart, brain and memory, while in the 15th and 16th centuries, they were thought to counteract poison and restore youth and vitality.

Coupled with a strong association with the sun, the ruby is considered the stone of love, energy, passion and power, believed to restore vital life forces and increase energy and vigor in its wearers. Also known as the stone of courage, this gem is thought to preserve mental and physical health, making it a great choice for any special occasion.

Famous rubies

The Sunrise Ruby

This Burmese stone is the most expensive piece of ruby jewelry ever sold at auction, raking in close to $30 million. Weighing in at 25.29 carats, the ruby is named after a poem by Rumi and is said to have extraordinary color, purity and cut.

The DeLong Star Ruby

This gem was named after its owner, Edith Haggin DeLong, and uncovered in Burma during the 1930s. It was donated to the American Museum of Natural History in 1937, and later stolen in a notorious heist by J.R. Murphy in 1964. A massive ransom was paid by a wealthy businessman to get the DeLong Star Ruby back to its original home.

The Liberty Bell Ruby

Discovered in the 1950s in eastern Africa, this stone is the largest mined ruby known to man. It was sculpted to represent a miniature version of the Liberty Bell, with 50 diamonds also included in its design. It was stolen during a jewelry heist in 2014 and is unfortunately yet to be recovered.

The Burmese Ruby Tiara

When Queen Elizabeth married her husband, Philip, she received a number of spectacular-quality rubies from the people of Burma. In 1973, she commissioned Gerrard & Co. to create a tiara using 96 of the gems she received as a gift and named it for the Burmese people.

Woman waiting at airport with luggage.

With so many small yet important pieces, packing jewelry for a trip can seem like a monumental task. After you’ve decided on a few key styles you’d like to bring, follow these packing tips to ensure a safe arrival for all your favorite bling.

Rings

Use a jewelry roll or organizer to keep track of all your rings. Jewelry rolls will contain a soft tube that holds your rings in place so they don’t accidentally slip from your bag. You can also opt to use a small plastic bag to keep these pieces separate and safe from the rest of your stuff.

Earrings

There are two simple ways you can safely pack your earrings without the use of a jewelry organizer.

 • Buttons

Insert your earring through the button hole, using one button per earring pair. Place the completed buttons in a smaller plastic bag or soft pouch to keep them all in one place.

 • Cardboard

Find a stiff piece of cardboard and use a pen tip to punch small holes (in pairs) into the board. Insert your earrings into the holes and place the entire piece into a plastic bag. This way, you can easily see all the earrings you’ve brought with you but don’t have to worry about losing your smaller studs.

Bracelets

Use a rolled-up washcloth to keep track of all your favorites. Slide your bracelets over the towel, then tuck it into a plastic bag to prevent any potential slippage.

Necklaces

The trickiest part of packing necklaces is figuring out how to prevent the chain from knotting up on itself. Luckily, there are a few easy ways to prevent this from happening.

 • Straws

Thread one end of the necklace into the straw, pulling it out the other. Then, you can secure the latch without worrying about it catching and becoming impossible to pull apart.

 • Jewelry bag

A small silk jewelry bag looks great and protects your most precious pieces. Drape the chain out of the bag and around the clasp so your necklace won’t get knotted. You can also use small plastic bags and leave a bit of the chain outside for a similar result.

Other unique ways to pack your jewelry

With a little ingenuity, it’s easy to pack your jewelry using items you already have in your home. Try using a few of our favorite packing materials the next time you go on vacation:

Mint tins — An old mint tin is perfect for keeping track of smaller pieces, such as rings and stud earrings. Here’s a hint: Stick a few cotton balls in there along with your jewelry and you’ll avoid any potential scratches.

Carabiners — Perfect to hold your rings, hoop earrings, and bracelets. Just clip them on and pack them up with the rest of your jewelry for a cheap and easy way to store your travel pieces.

Baseball card holders — For an interesting use of what may be an outdated item, these plastic dividers are great for separating jewelry. Put each item into its own area to keep them from getting lost or tangled.

Glasses case — If you’re a glasses wearer, make use of one of the glasses cases you have lying around by filling it up with some of your smaller items.

Socks — You’re already packing socks, so why not slip a few rings or earrings in before folding them together? The fabric will protect your jewelry from damage and you’ll save space by using something you’ll be wearing, too!

Contacts case — Especially great for your smallest pieces. You can also separate out earrings by packing them up in your contacts case.

Cling wrap — Protect your necklaces with this affordable tip: Lay out your jewelry on a piece of cling wrap and press down another layer over it. Make sure to leave space between each piece so they’ll remain tight and in shape for when you decide to wear them.

Erasers — Place your earring backs into erasers to keep them from getting lost during transit. You can also use small pencil erasers as makeshift earring backs, in case you forget the ones you have.

Keep it simple

One of the easiest ways to ensure a stress-free vacation is to invest in a good jewelry organizer. This way, all your jewelry will be in one place and easily accessible, even if you’re living out of your suitcase for a while. Happy birthday, May babies! With spring in full swing, the landscape is beginning to fill with bright colors and seasonal delights. Flowers and lush vegetation appear out of seemingly nowhere, fed by the thirst-quenching rains of April — so it’s only fitting that rich, leafy green would be our May birthstone color.

While emerald is traditionally considered May’s birthstone, it’s a softer stone that may not hold up to regular wear over a number of years. We only carry jewelry that is worthy of our Free Lifetime Warranty because we know it will retain its beauty over the years. For this reason, we do not carry emerald jewelry at Shane Co. Instead, we offer similarly colored stones like beautiful green sapphire and peridot. With our selection of green jewelry with hand-picked stones, you’ll still be able to show off your month’s birthstone color with versatile Shane Co. styles.

Want to learn more about these stunning stones? Let’s start with green sapphire.

Green Sapphire: A May Birthstone Alternative

Shane Co. carries a gorgeous alternative for May birthstone babies: green sapphire. This beautiful green birthstone is one of three precious gems Shane Co. carries (the other two being diamond and ruby), making it the closest quality and an excellent alternative to emerald. Sapphire is a variety of corundum, an aluminum oxide mineral that forms in crystals and can range from transparent to opaque. With a high rating on the Mohs hardness scale, green sapphire is appropriate for a wide variety of jewelry. It’s also very durable and easy to clean, meaning you can safely wear a green sapphire ring to show off your birthstone without worrying about potential nicks or damage.

While you probably imagine sapphire as the traditional blue you see in most cases, sapphire comes in a number of different colors, depending on the presence of certain elements in its makeup. Green sapphire owes its rich color to iron, giving it a higher density than most gemstones. It can range from pale to deep green, sometimes with hints of yellow or blue. It’s also one of the rarer colors of naturally occurring sapphire. Its unique tone is the result of both yellow and blue bands, which make the gem appear green to the naked eye.

Did You Know?

Legend has it that the first person to wear sapphire was Zeus’ rival, Prometheus, who stole the gemstone from Caucasus along with fire from heaven. The idea that sapphire was a “Gem of Heaven” was also popular with the ancient Persians, who believed that cut sapphires were a chip from the pedestal that supported Earth and reflected back onto the sky.

Spiritual and Mystical Properties

Like many other gemstones, sapphire is believed to have a number of healing properties. Sapphires of all colors are considered stones of wisdom, with green sapphire in particular pointing to wisdom of fidelity, integrity, loyalty and trust. It is associated with stimulation of the heart chakra, encouraging compassion and enhancing one’s spiritual vision, as well as calming and focusing the mind. When the heart chakra is out of balance, we can begin to feel controlling effects within relationships and become quite critical of others. This green gem helps to resolve blocks and re-balance, so that we can understand our needs and emotions more clearly. Wearers of sapphire can enjoy the effects of tranquility and thoughtfulness, releasing mental tension and restoring balance within the body.

Where Can I Find May Birthstone Jewelry?

At Shane Co., we offer May birthstone jewelry made only with directly and ethically sourced stones. Our green sapphires are vibrant and carefully cut to bring out the best of these unique gems. You can find our entire selection of green sapphire jewelry here, or check out some of our individual designs below to find the right piece for your style and budget.

Shaped in a beautiful infinity design and crafted with 14k yellow gold, this is a special gift for any May baby.

Green Sapphire Branch Necklace: This simple but stunning necklace has a unique branch-like design made with our high-quality sterling silver, studded with one round green sapphire.

Peridot

Another great choice for a May birthstone is peridot. A less widely known stone than sapphire, peridot is the gem-quality variety of the mineral olivine, named for its rich olive-like color. Its color comes from properties of the mineral itself, rather than trace impurities, like many other gemstones. On rare occasions, peridot is even found inside meteorites!

Did You Know?

In Hawaii, peridot once symbolized the tears of Pele, the goddess of fire, who controls the flow of lava in volcanic eruptions.

Where Can I Find Peridot Jewelry?

Shop all peridot and other green jewelry online at ShaneCo.com, or visit us in-store to speak with one of our expert jewelry consultants for help finding the perfect gift.

Title graphic for “Which U.S. State Owns the Most Shoes?”

How many shoes are too many? Many would argue the limit does not exist. From sandals to sneakers and everything in between, a well-rounded closet is essential for comfort and style. In this survey, we set out to uncover which states own the most and least shoes.

Methodology

In this campaign, we surveyed 3,193 Americans over two weeks asking questions such as how many shoes they own, shoe preferences, shopping habits, and much more. Read on to see what we found!

States with the Most & Least Shoes

Radial chart displaying the states with the most and least shoes.

Are you someone who owns a few pairs of shoes, or are you in the double digits? Well, it turns out that 16 or more pairs of shoes aren’t too many for respondents in states like Maine, North Carolina, and Mississippi. Maine came in first with over half of respondents saying that they own 16 or more pairs of shoes. Oklahoma owns the least amount of shoes, with 52% of respondents saying they only own 1-5 pairs of shoes.

Americans’ Favorite Types of Shoes

Graphic displaying the three most popular types of shoes in America.

Turns out when it comes to shoe type in America, we go for comfort. Over half of Americans say their favorite shoe type is the sneaker. Second- and third-place finalists don’t even come close to the first-place winner. Boots came in second place at 10.70%, and sandals or flip flops came in right behind at 9.24%.

Men vs. Women Shoe Habits

Graphic displaying shoe habits between men and women.

There are pretty stark differences in shoe preferences between men and women. When it comes to deciding what the least comfortable types of shoes are, 4 in 5 women say that heels are the least comfortable. An overwhelming majority for the shoe that can instantly dress up any outfit, but often can’t wait to be taken off the second they are put on. Men seem to prefer closed-toe shoes, with 1 in 5 saying that sandals or flip-flops are the least comfortable.

Now let’s talk about creases. Yes, those creases that form over time on the tops of your shoes when you walk. Completely natural, right? Well, it’s becoming more commonplace to want to prevent the creases from forming to preserve the fresh look of the shoe. Women are almost twice as likely as men to think shoes are ruined once they have creases in them. Crazy, right?

Possibly one of the most interesting insights from this graphic is about dating preferences. When asked if they would date someone who cared more about their shoes than they do, half of our male respondents said that they would and it didn’t bother them, compared to just 39% of women.

A Look Inside Americans’ Shoe Habits

Graphic displaying overall shoe habits across America.

While we gleaned quite a few interesting insights from this survey as seen in the graphic above, a few notable ones stood out. A whopping 64% of respondents admit they would rather give up alcohol than their favorite pair of shoes. 48% of Baby Boomers say they would rather give up their favorite snack food over their favorite pair of shoes. Which would you choose?

Closing Thoughts

Whether they are for everyday use or a special occasion like a wedding, shoes are a simple, yet important, part of our lives and when taken care of properly can last a long time. Before it’s time to walk down the aisle, make sure you have both shoes and rings picked out in advance. At Shane Co. we have a variety of rings to choose from to fit any budget and even the option to design your own ring so you can get exactly what you want, whatever that may be.

Aquamarine is the beautiful March birthstone and our featured gemstone this month. With its healing qualities, rich mythology, and unique color, Shane Co.’s high-quality aquamarine jewelry makes the perfect birthday gift for her. Find out more about this gemstone’s history and mystical properties and start shopping Shane Co.’s exclusive aquamarine collection below.

Matching aquamarine earrings and necklace.

What is aquamarine?

The name aquamarine comes from the Latin word “aqua marina,” which means “sea water.” This makes it the perfect Pisces birthstone, reminding its wearers of the water-loving fish in which this zodiac is embodied. As a semiprecious member of the beryl family, aquamarine is closely related to emerald and morganite and shares many similarities to golden beryl. Its distinct color and clarity match its name — with shades ranging from seafoam green to teal and light blue, it resembles the ocean in its appearance. Aquamarine is especially prized for its clarity, having little to no inclusions in most stones.

The clear nature of aquamarine makes it a great stone for faceting. With a rating of 7.8 on the Mohs hardness scale, it’s tough enough to be durable but still soft enough to accommodate a wide variety of gemstone cutting styles and shapes. It’s not unusual to find aquamarine in a variety of hues, making every aquamarine ring, necklace, or other piece unique to the wearer. Most aquamarine is mined in Brazil or Colombia, but it can also be found in Kenya, Zambia, Pakistan, Madagascar, and Russia. It’s even found in the snowy peaks of Mount Antero and White Mountain in the Colorado Rocky Mountain range. In fact, aquamarine was named the official state gemstone of Colorado in 1971! For that reason and many others, it holds a special place in our hearts.

Did you know?

The world’s largest cut aquamarine currently sits in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. It was cut from a huge aquamarine stone found in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil. Weighing a grand total of 10,363 carats, the stone features wide cuts in the back to create the illusion that the crystal is glowing from within. It was named the Dom Pedro after Brazilian emperors Pedro I and Pedro II.

History and mythology

Aquamarine has been a popular stone in jewelry making for about as long as humans have known about it. Decorative jewelry and protective aquamarine amulets have been found dated as far back as 500 B.C.

The Romans used aquamarine frequently in their jewelry, even giving it as a wedding gift to their brides. They believed it promoted feelings of happiness, youthfulness, wisdom, and stability, promising newlyweds a long-lasting and happy marriage. During the Middle Ages, its relationship-related properties were cited as having the ability to reawaken the love of married couples. It was also believed, like its Neptune-ruled Pisces counterparts, to have mystical properties that helped in developing fortune-telling skills. It was often cut into crystal balls and adopted by psychics and seers.

Notably, it is used to help its wearers get in touch with suppressed emotions, heal emotional trauma, and clear the mind. For this reason, it’s celebrated as a powerful meditation tool, with believers saying that it leads the meditator to his or her “core spirituality.” Just like the body of water it’s named for, this incredible stone calms the heart and encourages clarity.

Aquamarine was also used to protect sailors during their journeys across the ocean. The story goes that Neptune, god of the sea, took hold of the stone when it fell out of a siren’s jewel box and washed up on shore. Seamen would wear the stone throughout their trips to ensure safe passage through the choppy waters.

Did you know?

After Princess Diana and Prince Charles divorced in 1996, the beloved princess wore an Art Deco-style emerald cut aquamarine and diamond ring on her engagement hand. She had a matching bracelet to go with it and, for many, the ring exemplified Diana’s impeccable taste and independent spirit. The sparkling blue ring matched Diana’s trademark eyes and symbolized her courage as she embarked on a new life journey. The large aquamarine stone is estimated to be worth around £75,000 in today’s market, but its historic appeal and sentimental value is priceless.

The ring was last seen worn by Meghan Markle as she and Prince Harry drove off to the evening reception following their royal wedding. It’s certainly a testament to aquamarine’s durable qualities that the stone remains as polished and flawless as when it was worn by the late princess.

Why aquamarine makes the perfect gift

Besides being a great March birthday gift idea, aquamarine is also the official stone of the 19th wedding anniversary. Whether you’re searching for a traditional anniversary gift like a stunning aquamarine necklace or want to surprise your Pisces girl with a unique birthday gift for her, Shane Co.’s collection of aquamarine jewelry comes in a wide variety of budget-friendly styles.

Unlike many other stones, it comes in a range of sizes, so you can pick from delicate pendants to eye-catching fashion rings and more. It’s also very easy to care for because of its durability. Just gently scrub with a soft brush and soapy water until it’s free of any dirt or grime picked up along the way. Its lower price point makes it a great alternative to traditional diamonds, in both fashion jewelry and even as the center stone of an engagement ring. With its love-enhancing qualities, it’s not unusual to see aquamarine engagement rings, especially with the stone’s trendy color recently coming to light.

Did you know?

An old wives’ tale says that aquamarine receives many of its mystical qualities from the moon and tides — so if your aquamarine ring is showing signs of fading and discoloration, legend has it that placing it under the full moon for a night will renew its energy reserve and restore the stone to its former beauty. While we can’t promise that this is true, aquamarine is durable enough that you probably won’t have to worry about its beauty diminishing much throughout its lifetime.

For too long have men avoided rings for fear of public judgment. For too long have men denied the enjoyment of bedazzling their fingers with precious metals, gems, and more. For too long have men suppressed their true style for the sake of blending in.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. We want men to feel comfortable adorning their digits with the rings that best express their personality and style. Accentuate a suave suit, bolster a streetwear look, or channel your inner Viking — the choice is yours. Do you know which ring is right for you?

In this guide, we’ll take you through everything there is to know about men’s rings. From the types of rings available and what they mean, to finger symbolism and tips for rocking your ring, we’ve got you covered below.

What Are the Different Kinds of Rings for Men?

From a class ring to remember the glory days of college to a family ring to commemorate cherished heritage, men have many ring styles to choose from beyond just wedding rings. Each style is associated with its own symbolism, so it’s important to know what your ring says about your fashion sense, religious beliefs, social status, or romantic availability.

Men’s Signet Rings

Dating back to 3500 B.C., signet rings were used by nobility and aristocrats as actual signatures to prove the authenticity of important documents by pressing the ring’s embossed symbol into hot wax. This technique left a permanent marking that was unique to the wearer. Typically, men’s signet rings were emblazoned with a signet, or symbol, such as a coat of arms or family crest. However, throughout the signet ring’s 4,500 years of existence, men have experimented with a wide variety of imagery ranging from monograms and icons to expressions of individuality and aesthetic refinement.

Men’s Affiliation Rings

Affiliation rings are meant to denote affiliation with a specific entity or society. They’ve been used throughout history and continue to be in use today. Rather than proving one’s actual identity, as with a signet ring, modern affiliation rings bear the mark of a man’s college, fraternity, military rank, or even attendance at a specific Super Bowl game.

Men’s Wedding Rings

As the name suggests, men’s wedding rings are exchanged alongside vows of marriage and are worn to symbolize love and commitment to their spouses. While evidence of wedding rings goes back nearly 5,000 years, men didn’t always wear them. In fact, it only became commonplace in the mid-twentieth century, when overseas soldiers donned them to feel comforted by thoughts of their spouses back home.

Typically, men’s wedding rings are simple and undressed, without loud gemstones or intricate patterns. Yellow gold is a traditional and timeless choice of material, but the modern man has a wide variety of metals, wood types, and other materials like carbon fiber to choose from.

Men’s Fashion Rings

Anything that doesn’t fall into the above categories is generally deemed a fashion ring. Otherwise known as personal statement rings, these rings are the ultimate form of self-expression. Go for a sterling silver skull with diamonds for eyes, your favorite designer’s logo bedecked in platinum, or something with a variety of vibrant gemstones — the world of men’s fashion rings is your oyster.

What Are the Common Materials for Men’s Rings?

Choosing a material for your ring can be harder than you might think. With so many options at your fingertips, you are no longer bound to choosing between yellow- or white-hued rings for men. Options abound, from tungsten to wood to carbon fiber.

Precious Metals

Still, the safest and most traditional men’s wedding ring material is precious metal. Men who want to sport a classic look and own jewelry that will hold its value should consider these materials. The three top dogs in this category are gold, silver, and platinum.

Gold

Gold is the metal that moves armies and makes empires. It has been used in jewelry since the time of ancient Egypt and has not lost an ounce of allure in the thousands of years since. Despite the wide variety of modern materials for men’s rings, gold always has been and always will be a cultural mainstay.

The thing is, pure gold is heavy and extremely soft, making it a pretty poor choice for jewelry. To make gold lighter, stronger, and more suited for your finger, it is alloyed — or combined — with base metals. The tradeoff is that the more base metals are included, the less pure a gold ring is.

Each ring’s purity is denoted by its karat value, measured in 24 parts with 24k being pure gold. Therefore, 18k gold is about 75 percent pure gold mixed with 25 percent base metals since 18/24 = 0.75.

In terms of rings for men, gold is typically sold in three colors: yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold. Each one is created with a unique alloy of metals. White gold is pure gold married with a white metal like nickel or manganese, and rose gold relies on copper for its reddish hue.

Silver

Silver often plays second fiddle to gold but is actually a respectable choice for any man who wants a white-toned ring with humble beauty at an affordable price. It isn’t often used as a men’s wedding ring material, but it is commonly found in men’s fashion rings, affiliation rings, and other rings for men.

Like gold, pure silver doesn’t make for very durable jewelry as it scratches and tarnishes easily during daily use. This is remedied by alloying silver with copper and occasionally other base metals. Unlike gold, the purity of a silver alloy is measured on a separate 1,000-point scale of fineness. At 950 fineness, or 95 percent purity, sterling silver is the most common silver carried by jewelers.

Platinum

If silver is too humble for your tastes, platinum is a gorgeous white metal that is also one of the rarest used in jewelry. It’s far from unattainable, but men who gravitate toward the exclusivity of platinum should be ready to stomach its higher price.

Price and status are actually the main drivers of men who wear platinum rings. The luxurious metal bears a striking resemblance to silver, so much so that it can be indistinguishable at a distance. Platinum jewelry is undoubtedly a status symbol, made known by its slightly less lustrous appearance when compared to silver up close.

However, platinum is also available in lower karat options, following the same karat system as gold. This makes it more accessible to men who want a taste of the finer things in life at a price more fit for the masses.

Titanium

Titanium is a white metal known for its light weight and unwavering durability. Titanium rings for men are the perfect choice for everyday use when you don’t want your ring to crack or bend under strenuous activity.

For laborers, gym rats, and macho men, titanium both symbolizes strength and backs up that connotation with real durability. Its featherweight composition also makes it less bulky than other metal rings. Another bonus for titanium is that it is a highly common metal and therefore highly affordable.

Tungsten

For the sciencey guys out there, tungsten carbide rings are exceptionally cool. They’re made from chemically binding tungsten with carbon atoms, resulting in the hardest and strongest metal on Earth. It features material with a masculine graphite hue and is far denser than steel or titanium, giving it a visceral, weighty feel.

It goes without saying that tungsten carbide is extremely scratch-resistant and strong. Tungsten rings won’t tarnish either, making them another affordable alternative to silver for men who don’t shy away from manual work that needs to be done.

Note: Tungsten carbide bands are made through a binding process that can include allergenic metals like nickel and cobalt. Men who experience allergic reactions to these metals should use caution when shopping for tungsten carbide rings.

Silicone

Silicone is one of the more unusual materials available for men’s rings, due to its unusual flexibility. These rings are made from synthetic plastic polymers and rubber, which provides their durable, slightly bendy, low-profile, and hypoallergenic properties.

While some feel the inexpensive and pedestrian rubber is not suited for traditionally fanciful jewelry like men’s wedding rings, it does have its high points. Silicone is one of the cheapest ring materials and can be molded into any shape and injected with a wide variety of inks, allowing for nearly endless color and design options. The material is highly resilient, too, withstanding temperatures between -58 and 932 degrees Fahrenheit.

Even if you do prefer the elegant and timeless look of a metal ring, silicone can still have its place as a backup. Many men like the versatility of slipping on their silicone replacement ring while lifting iron in the gym or performing other activities that could damage their metal showpiece.

Wood

If you’re more of a woodsman or a silent lumberjack type, you might be interested in wood rings for men. It might sound counterintuitive, but wood rings are actually environmentally friendly as no mining is required for their construction.

Like some other alternative options we’ve discussed above, wood rings are hypoallergenic, lightweight, and inexpensive. They require regular care and upkeep to stay in good condition, however, so they aren’t the best choice for men who are taking their first foray into jewelry.

Ring Symbolism for Each Finger

So you have a ring style and preferred material in mind, but now you’re wondering which finger you should wear your ring on. Of course, you do you — but if you don’t want to send the wrong message, the decision isn’t as easy as picking the finger that looks best to you. Old traditions and cultural associations abound when it comes to wearing rings on certain fingers.

Thumb Rings

Unless you’re T-Pain or Johnny Depp, you’ll need a lot of confidence to pull off a thumb ring in the U.S. These rings are often bulky, loud, and make a bold statement — often of wealth and influence. However, if you’re a go-big-or-go-home sort of guy and don’t mind answering the inevitable horde of questions, the thumb is a grand digit to choose. It’s especially useful if you’re already wearing rings on other fingers and don’t want your hand to feel claustrophobic or uncomfortable.

Pointer Finger Rings

For centuries, the pointer finger was the most common destination for men to wear rings — especially rings with a signet or crest that denoted family status or rank and privilege in an association. The pointer symbolizes power, authority, and leadership, which makes sense as one does a lot of pointing when barking orders.

Even if you’re not the bossy type, the pointer is actually a great choice for a ring. You can even keep with tradition and don your favorite class ring, fraternal ring, or family ring with your ancestral coat of arms.

Middle Finger Rings

The middle finger is typically avoided when donning rings because it can interfere with everyday tasks and cause discomfort. On the other hand, it is the largest finger and can look quite masculine dressed in a ring, which may appeal to some men. Consider this option for a sleek, understated ring if comfort is less of an issue for you, personally.

Ring Finger Rings

The ring finger is culturally associated with love, romance, and marriage. It was once thought that the ring finger was the only finger to house an artery that leads to the heart, making it a natural selection for men’s wedding rings in particular. For these reasons, adorning your ring finger (especially on your left hand) with rings for any other purpose is likely to cause others to misjudge your marital status.

Pinky Finger Rings

Like the thumb, the pinky finger is a top choice for men’s fashion rings. It isn’t shackled by any cultural, religious, or symbolic associations to abide by, so you’re free to wear anything you want here without judgment. Another pro is that pinky-worn rings are isolated from the pointer finger and stay relatively out of the way and don’t interfere with most tasks. Consider wearing large, colorful, or bulky rings like signet or affiliation rings on your pinky finger. It’s a finger for rings that want to be noticed.

How to Wear Men’s Rings

You have a ring or several rings picked out. You’re jazzed about the prospect of donning a bit of bling. But how exactly do you go about it in practice? What size should you get? Does this ring go well with that watch?

How to Size Rings for Men

Each man has uniquely sized fingers requiring uniquely sized rings. Furthermore, the ring size you need depends on the finger you plan to wear it on. Luckily, sizing a ring is easy. Simply visit a jeweler like Shane Co. and have your finger professionally sized. Or, if you’re shopping online, print off a sizing guide to do it at home. For more information on ring sizing, visit our detailed ring sizing page.

How Many Rings Should a Man Wear?

The easy answer is the number that you are comfortable wearing. This depends on the man, his sense of style, and his level of confidence when it comes to wearing rings. Some men are only comfortable with a simple wedding band on their ring finger, while others want to max out their hands with as much bling as they can fit over their knuckles.

If you lean toward the latter, we would still suggest a maximum of around three rings per hand. This allows each piece to stand for itself in an uncluttered environment and prevents rings from grinding together and suffering damage.

Should a Man Match Metals?

Yes. You’ve likely heard fashion rules like matching a brown belt with brown shoes and a brown watch strap, and the same advice applies to matching the metals of rings you wear. Of course this “rule” is not do or die, but if possible, match the metal tone of your rings and accessories. For example, if you’re wearing yellow gold rings, a gold watch and belt buckle would follow suit.

But how do you know which metal tone you should wear in the first place? If you’re unsure, examine your skin tone. If it’s cool, consider white metals like silver, platinum, or white gold. If your skin tone is on the warmer spectrum, think about wearing yellow gold instead.

Own It!

Confidence is a must when it comes to men wearing rings. While men’s wedding rings are now commonplace, sporting rings on other fingers is still gaining popularity. You might have to field some questions about what your ring means, where you got it, or why you’re wearing it. But one thing you can count on for sure is that you — or your rings, rather — will be noticed by friends, family, and passers-by alike.

At first, your ring might feel foreign or even awkward, and that’s okay. If you’re struggling with confidence in public, try wearing it around the house until it feels second nature. Then go flaunt it like a man!

Conclusion

Rings are underrated as accessories for men. The right ring can work synergistically with a watch or belt to bring your personal style to the next level. Wearing rings is also an excellent way to communicate a powerful message with your outfit, be it commitment, religion, wealth, or identity. When you’re ready to add another dimension to your look or you’re getting engaged to your better half, Shane Co. has a wide selection of men’s rings to suit your needs.

Happy birthday, February babies! Your birthstone is gorgeous amethyst, a deep purple gemstone with a long history of spiritual uses.

What is it?

This unique stone is a purple variety of the popular gemstone quartz. Its name comes from the Greek word “amethystos,” meaning “intoxicate,” because the ancient Greeks believed the stone protected its owner from drunkenness.

Its unique color, which ranges from light pinkish-purple to deep violet, is due to irradiation, impurities of iron and the presence of other trace elements. It’s a relatively hard stone, making it perfect for most types of jewelry. It’s prominently found in Brazil, as well as South Korea, Russia and Zambia. It’s even mined in some areas of the U.S., including Arizona, Colorado, Texas and Pennsylvania.

Did you know?

A popular myth about Bacchus, the god of wine, shows the reasoning behind amethyst’s connection with spirits. It was said that Bacchus released guardian tigers upon a wandering maiden before the goddess Diana intervened, transforming the maiden into a clear stone. Bacchus was seized with remorse and poured his wine over the stone, turning it a rich violet color. The maiden’s name, Amethyst, was quickly transferred to the crystal.

Amethyst history

Amethyst has been a popular gemstone for centuries, with ancient Greeks and Egyptians both making use of the stone. Egyptians created amulets with the stone, with early jewelers producing classic, practical designs and later artists designing more complex works.

Throughout the Middle Ages, it was considered a symbol of royalty and used to decorate sacred spaces. Tibetans consider it sacred to the Buddha and often use it when creating prayer beads.

Did you know?

Legend says that St. Valentine donned an amethyst ring carved into a Cupid figurine. Because “chaste love” was highly valued in medieval times, and because the gemstone had a reputation for calming passions, the two were a match made in heaven.

Spiritual symbolism

Best known for its ability to keep wearers grounded in spiritual thought, this unique stone is thought to protect, provide an aura of peace and enhance meditative state. As a stimulator of the Third Eye and Crown Chakras, it is also thought to initiate greater understanding and develop psychic ability.

Much like the zodiac signs it’s associated with, amethyst is believed to enhance creativity and strengthen the imagination. It is often used to help guide meditation and recharge its wearers.

Happy birthday, January! Your birthstone is deep red garnet — a beautiful gemstone that comes with an age-old story and a lot of amazing properties.

What is garnet?

Like many gemstones, most garnet is formed at convergent plate boundaries — the heat and pressure that occurs in this amazing place works to crystallize the minerals that garnet is made up of into the stone we eventually see polished and cut into jewelry. Its name goes all the way back to the 14th century and the word “gernet,” meaning “dark red.” It is also thought to be derived from the Latin word “granatum,” related to “pomum granatum,” which refers to the pomegranate, a fruit with a dark red seed.

Despite popular belief, this stone actually comes in a variety of shades, though the red we know and love is by far the most abundant and popular.

Did you know?

The famed philosopher Plato had his portrait engraved on a garnet gemstone.

Garnet uses

Garnet was one of the most common gemstones in the Middle Ages, usually paired with gold. They have been found to have been used as far back as 3000 B.C. and have a rich history in Czechoslovakia, where they were frequently found in churches and adorning royalty.

Besides being loved for its gemstone qualities, this unique stone also has a great many industrial uses. Because of its relatively high rating on the Mohs scale of hardness, it is frequently used as an abrasive, for waterjet cutting, manufacturing and even as a filtration tool.

Did you know?

According to legend, Noah used a carefully cut garnet stone to illuminate the ark when days and nights grew dark and lonely. Hebrew writers also include garnet as one of the 12 gems in Aaron’s breastplate.

Spiritual properties

Garnet’s unique healing and spiritual properties make it a highly sought-after gemstone. Believed to provide a protective influence among its wearers, the gemstone can bring forth hope, alleviate bad dreams, and revitalize the heart chakra. Shown by its red color, this stone inspires love and passion in combination with balance and serenity.

It’s time for another deep dive on this month’s birthstones. For December, we have gorgeous blue topaz and tanzanite taking on rich shades of blue for all our December babies. Read on to find out more about these sparkling stones and shop our favorite December birthstones.

Blue Topaz

Blue topaz gets its name from the word “topazion,” which may be related to the Egyptian island of Topazos. In the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the stone was valued greatly for its uniqueness and general rarity, though large deposits of the stone were eventually found in Brazil. Nowadays, topaz is very popular and accessible.

Originally, it was thought that all yellow gemstones were topaz, but it was soon discovered that topaz varies in color from yellow to blue and green to completely colorless. Blue topaz can sometimes resemble aquamarine, with a slightly deeper color that is sometimes heat-treated to enhance its appearance.

Did you know?

Topaz means “heat” in Hindu mythology. In fact, topaz was considered one of the “sacred stones” of the Kalpa tree, making it a holy stone for the Hindus. It was often worn as a pendant and believed to relieve thirst, extend one’s lifespan and increase intelligence.

Spiritual properties

Blue topaz is believed to stimulate the self-confidence of wearers, inspire creativity and increase attention span. It helps one to better articulate their thoughts and feelings and open lines of communication. A stone of peacefulness, blue topaz is thought to calm the emotions and is often used to aide meditation and spiritual readings.

Did you know?

It’s been suggested that the word “topaz” also comes from the Sanskrit word “tapas,” meaning fire, because blue topaz was believed to have cooling properties. In ancient civilizations, it was believed that when thrown into boiling water, the stone could actually cool the pot down.

Blue topaz gifts

Want to celebrate a December birthday in style? These blue topaz gifts are just the thing.

Infinity blue topaz pendant necklace

This Infinity Pear-Shaped Blue Topaz Pendant has just the right amount of flair. With two shades of blue topaz coming together in a unique infinity design, it’s perfect worn alone or paired with matching earrings. Even better? It’s only $125.

Tanzanite

Unlike many of our favorite gems, tanzanite is actually a relatively recent discovery. Tiffany & Co. named this brilliant blue gemstone after Tanzania, the first (and only) location where it was found in 1967. It is also known as “blue zoisite.” Since its discovery, it has become one of the most popular blue gemstones on the market.

Tanzanite has the unique property of being pleochroic, meaning it appears differently colored depending on how it is cut. It ranges from a deep blue to a more purplish tint. Its color is caused by small amounts of vanadium within its mineral structure. Tanzanite’s purple tone makes it stand out, particularly among other varieties of blue stones.

Did you know?

Tanzanite’s popularity grew in large part due to a public education campaign funded by Tiffany & Co. They developed and promoted educational materials to help jewelers understand, market and explain the characteristics of tanzanite to new customers.

Spiritual properties

Tanzanite is believed to have a high vibrational energy that envelops its wearers in protection and safety. Like blue topaz, it promotes good lines of communication while soothing and calming. It is also thought to bring a sense of self-awakening to those who wear it, encouraging psychic abilities and powers.

Did you know?

Popular legends in the region where tanzanite was discovered consider the stone a gift from the gods, as it was discovered by Masai cattle herders who first saw the stones after a brush fire in the area which was caused by lightning.

Tanzanite gifts

Tanzanite and diamond pendant necklace

This Tanzanite and Diamond Pendant is a show-stopper, featuring both white gold and rose gold details, one pear-shaped tanzanite gemstone and a grand total of 57 round diamonds. Try it out with matching dangle earrings for the ultimate look.

Hairstyles have come a long way since the days of beehive updos and monstrous perms. Cans of hairspray are no longer quite as essential to a morning routine as they once were, and luckily for the men, neither are fistfuls of gel. While it’s easy to laugh at the hairstyles in our parents’ old yearbook photos (an indisputably fun way to pass the time), they may have been on to something — many of the popular hairstyles of generations past are making a swift comeback.

Outdated hairstyles are once again stepping onto the scene. Celebrities are rocking mullets, and hairstylists everywhere are shown Farrah Fawcett-like curtain bangs as inspiration for their clients’ haircuts. While millennials and Gen Z are certainly responsible for reviving these older hairstyles, younger generations have hairstyles of their own, made viral by platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Pastel hair dye and futuristic bubble braids live in harmony with updated ’70s-era shags — much to the confusion of Gen X and baby boomers.

At Shane Co., we know the importance of aesthetics. With such a wide range of popular hairstyles in 2021, both old and new, we decided to take a closer look at which hairstyles Americans are searching for, and where, using Google Trends search volume.

Read on to find out which hairstyle is Googled most in your state!

The Most Popular Feminine Hairstyle in Every U.S. State

A U.S. map showing the most googled feminine hairstyle in every state

First, we decided to take a look at the top-searched feminine hairstyle in every state over the past 12 months using Google Trends. From “money pieces” in Arizona to dreadlocks in Tennessee, each state has its own preferences when it comes to hairstyles. Popular searches vary quite a bit from coast to coast. Notably, the curtain bangs trend spans the map from California to Illinois to Connecticut.

The Most Popular Masculine Hairstyle in Every U.S. State

A U.S. map showing the most googled masculine hairstyle in every state

Next, we used the same methodology to find the top-searched masculine hairstyle in every state. As with the feminine hairstyles, the most popular masculine hairstyles are not unique to one region of the country. These styles span from crew cuts in Alaska to curly undercuts in Florida to man bangs in Oregon! Which hairstyle is the most searched in your state?

The Most Popular Hairstyles Overall

A chart listing the most googled feminine hairstyles nationwide, by the count of state

Balayage takes the cake as the most Googled feminine hairstyle overall, with a total of six states. And it’s no wonder why — the low-maintenance, natural-looking glam is perfect for women who want to spice up their natural color, without forking up hundreds of dollars every few months for touch-ups.

Following closely behind is curtain bangs, top-searched in five states. This freshly revived hairstyle is straight out of the ’70s and is now dominating salons in 2021. Ombre is the next top-searched hairstyle, winning a total of four states. Ombre is similar to balayage in that it’s a low-maintenance coloring technique.

A chart listing the most googled masculine hairstyles nationwide, by the count of state

The undercut is no underdog. As the top-searched masculine hairstyle in six states, the undercut is the hairstyle of the moment, made popular by Cillian Murphy in “Peaky Blinders” and Brad Pitt in the film “Fury.”

Interestingly, the mullet is the second top-searched masculine hairstyle nationwide. Over a year and a half into the pandemic, it’s safe to say Zoom culture has given a whole new meaning to “business in the front, party in the back.” We’re all about professional appearances with an unexpected twist. Buzz cuts, French crops, curly undercuts, and afro fades all tie for the third top-searched styles, each earning the top spot in three states.

Happy birthday, November babies! It’s time for a deep dive on your beautiful birthstone: citrine. We love this bright stone for its unique color, durability and spiritual properties. Read on to find out more about this amazing gemstone.

What is citrine?

Citrine is a member of the quartz family, known for its particular yellow to orange color. Its name is derived from the citron fruit, a yellow variety similar to the lemon. Citrine is actually quite rare, especially in the lighter yellow color we sometimes see it in. It ranks a 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness, making it quite resilient and perfect for rings, necklaces, earrings and more. The different varieties of this unique gemstone are as follows:

 • Yellow quartz: citrine with a lemon yellow color
 • Golden citrine: citrine with a golden yellow color
 • Madeira citrine: brownish-red to orange-red citrine
 • Palmeria citrine: bright orange citrine

Did you know?

Citrine is sometimes referred to as “The Merchant Stone” because of its associations with prosperity and wealth. In days past, shopkeepers were known to keep the stone near their cash registers with the belief that the stone would help encourage positive financial growth.

History

Matching citrine earrings and pendant.

Citrine has a long and reverent history. It was used for jewelry in ancient Rome, as well as throughout the 19th century. Stars such as Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo popularized the stone during the Art Deco period, with large gemstones set in elaborate jewelry pieces. Currently, it’s often seen in large cuts and Cubist-inspired looks, for bold jewelry that stands out from the crowd.

Spiritual properties

Citrine is commonly associated with the circulatory system, purifying and cleansing as one wears it. It is believed to energize and invigorate the body, as well as inspire and offer optimism to its wearers. Its bright yellow color reflects its ability to awaken and expand the mind, stimulating intellect and mental activity and encouraging balance and positive thought.

Did you know?

Citrine is commonly associated with Demeter, the Greek goddess of harvest, and Sekhmet, the Egyptian goddess of war.

Caring for citrine

Citrine is light- and heat-sensitive, which means you should avoid exposing it to prolonged sunlight. If overheated, the color can fade and appear less bright than it once did. Situations that may scratch or otherwise damage the stone should be avoided, but its Mohs rating means it can still be worn as an everyday piece without much fear of injury. Use a combination of warm water and soap to clean your jewelry with a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly and dry afterwards.

Did you know?

Some Chinese legends dictate that citrine is “The Stone of Success” that should be given to generous owners only. It was treasured by ancient Chinese emperors for its intellectual broadening qualities and is still used by some Chinese students and professors today to promote success on exams and other schoolwork.

Title graphic: a snapshot of female fashion and beauty moguls in 2021

Moguls within the fashion and beauty realms are hitting millionaire, nay, billionaire status in 2021. How do icons like Tory Burch, Diane von Furstenberg, and Kim Kardashian West stack up in terms of net worth, age, education, career paths, social media following, and more? Shane Co. took a deep dive into the profiles of the 50 richest fashion and beauty moguls to find out.

Read on to see the results!

Female Fashion & Beauty Icons Ranked

A scatter plot of the top 50 fashion and beauty moguls ranked by net worth

When you’re the founder of a bustling fashion or beauty brand, there’s money to be made. Affiliates and founders of well-known retail brands dominate the list of the top 10 richest moguls, from Zara heiress Sandra Ortega Mera, to Gap matriarch Doris Fisher, to Forever 21 creator Jin Sook Chang — all with jaw-dropping net worths upwards of $1.5 billion.

Landing in the top 10 are also fashion legends like Miuccia Prada (#2), Diane von Furstenberg (#6), Kim Kardashian West (#8), and Donatella’s daughter, Allegra Versace (#9). Belgian fashion designer DVF made her claim to fame in the 1970s with the iconic “wrap dress” and has been raking in success ever since, while the Italian billionaire Miuccia Prada has led the Prada luxury fashion house since 1978.

At the young age of 40, Kim K. just recently hit billionaire status this year, thanks to her lucrative shapewear and beauty lines — Skims and KKW Beauty. Also in the Kardashian clan, her sister Kylie Jenner hit the #13 spot on our list with her knock-out makeup line, Kylie Cosmetics. In addition to reality TV stars, celebrity singers/songwriters also made this list. At the helm of Fenty Beauty and SAVAGE x Fenty is Rihanna, ranking #15. As the founder of Ivy Park, Queen B herself, Beyoncé Knowles, also ranks within the top 25.

While fashion & retail moguls certainly command the top 30, beauty brand founders make up a large chunk of this list as well, including Anastasia Soare of Anastasia Beverly Hills (#17), Huda Kattan of Huda Beauty (#19), and Jamie Kern Lima of IT Cosmetics (#23).

A scatter plot showing the youngest fashion and beauty moguls under 40

Kim Kardashian West, Allegra Versace, Rihanna, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen made the top 10 youngest moguls in fashion and beauty — all holding net worths of $500 million and up. Katrina Lake also earns a spot on the millionaire list as the founder of the fashion subscription service Stitch Fix. She’s only 38 and is one of the most successful self-made entrepreneurs in the U.S. today. Lastly, Emily Weiss, founder of the cult-classic brand Glossier, is only 36 with a net worth of $12 million and a penchant for reshaping the beauty industry as we know it.

A chart showing the company, age, residence, and Instagram following of the top 50 fashion and beauty moguls

The table above highlights the credentials of all 50 moguls analyzed in this study. Moguls who launched their company, collection, or blog at a notably young age include Anna Sui, Kylie Jenner, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Aimee Song (Song of Style), and Oliva Palermo. What’s more, Karissa Bodnar (Thrive Causemetics) and Toni Ko (NYX Cosmetics) both launched their respective lines at the ripe age of 26!

In terms of Instagram, the majority of these moguls have a massive following. The moguls with the most Instagram followers include Kim K., Kylie & Kendall Jenner, Beyoncé Knowles, and Anna Wintour, each with 90 million followers or more.

Where Did Fashion & Beauty Icons Start Their Careers?

A chart displaying the first jobs of the top 50 fashion and beauty moguls

Now that we’ve looked at our moguls’ present, let’s dive into their pasts. Many of the big-name fashion designers and editors on our list crawled their way up the corporate ladder from retail associates, junior publicists, and assistants to CEOs and founders of their own lines. Notable examples of this upward trajectory are Tory Burch, Donna Karan, Anna Wintour, and Rachel Zoe, proving that grit, innovation, and an impeccable eye for style from a young age pay off long-term.

We also enjoy some of the oddball first jobs of a few moguls on our list. For instance, Kris Jenner embarked on a career as a flight attendant before launching her production company, Jenner Communications, and Vera Wang thrived as a talented figure skater before designing her first wedding dress. Honorable mentions include Spanx founder Sara Blakely, who got her start as a theme park ride attendant, and Miuccia Prada, who initially tested out her skills as a mime!

Summary Statistics of the Richest Women in Fashion

An infographic summarizing demographic data of the top 50 fashion and beauty moguls

To end our study, we’ve summarized some salient stats of the 50 richest female fashion and beauty moguls. While the average age of all moguls analyzed is 52, 34% of the women on this list are millennials, aged 25 to 39 years old. Likewise, this list is not dominated by those who hold PhDs or master’s degrees; 35% of the moguls have a high school degree as their highest degree obtained. All in all, the fashion and beauty industries make ample opportunities for ambitious and talented women, regardless of age or educational attainment.
If you work in the fashion or beauty industry, we know how hard you work, and a little bit of “self-care” may be in order. Treat yourself to a pair of diamond stud earrings or a 14k gold necklace. If an engagement is on the horizon, check out our collection of unique engagement rings.

Methodology

The females analyzed in this study come from Forbes’ 2020 list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women and Forbes’ Fashion’s Richest Self-Made Women. Our list spans multiple industries, from fashion and retail to cosmetics and skincare. Our list includes fashion designers, beauty brand founders, CEOs, fashion editors, models, bloggers, and socialites, among many others.

Net worth estimates come from individual Forbes profiles and celebritynetworth.com. Net worth estimates, ages, education levels, and Instagram followings in this study were collected in June 2021.

One of our favorite stones is taking center stage this month as September’s birthstone: blue sapphire! With a rating of 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness, this gem is second only to diamond in durability — and just as beautiful. Read on to learn more about this sparkling stone and shop our most popular September birthstone gifts.

What is sapphire?

Three loose sapphire stones.

As the gemstone variety of the mineral corundum, this stone is created much like other natural stones: with millions of years of pressure beneath the earth’s surface. Trace elements like iron, titanium, chromium, copper and magnesium give sapphires their unique colors. Though September is usually known for the rich blue variety, this superstar gem also comes in pink, green, yellow and many more colors. The only one missing is red — this color of corundum is known as ruby.

Did you know?

Some sapphires can create a starburst effect, also known as asterism, when you look closely. This is due to trapped inclusions that create a six-ray star pattern in the surface of the stone.

Sapphire’s history

This special stone has been mined since at least 800 B.C., probably earlier. While we don’t know the details surrounding the first discovery of sapphire, most historians guess that it was discovered in streams and riverbeds, where they have been washed away by erosion and many years of rain. With a long and storied history, this gem has always been prized for its rich blue hue and sparkling exterior.

Greeks wore them when they sought guidance from an oracle, while Buddhists believed the stone brought spiritual enlightenment. Hindus also used it during worship, and the ancient Hebrews at one time believed the Ten Commandments had been carved into tablets made of sapphire, though the references in the Bible may also have been referring to another blue stone — lapis lazuli.

Did you know?

Because of its extreme durability, this stone is also used in industrial application. The Apple Watch has a screen made of sapphire glass, while other electronics and similar products make use of its hardness.

Royal origins

This vibrant blue stone is well known for being popular among royals and has been the stone of choice for some famous engagement rings. In 1796, French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte proposed to his wife-to-be Josephine with a sapphire engagement ring. Featuring a pear-shaped sapphire and diamond on a simple gold band, the ring later sold at auction for close to a million dollars.

Britain’s Prince Charles also famously gifted Lady Diana Spencer with a 12-carat sapphire engagement ring, becoming one of the most recognizable rings we know of. In 2010, Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with this same ring.

Did you know?

According to a well-known legend, Helen of Troy owned a blue star sapphire that held the key to her unmatched desirability — she apparently had at least 30 suitors looking to wed! It’s possible that the face that launched a thousand ships actually owed it all to our favorite September birthstone.

Other famous gems

Collection of sapphire and diamond necklaces.

One of the most famous (and biggest) sapphires ever discovered is the Star of India. At an incredible 563 carats, this star sapphire was found in Sri Lanka. After discovery, George Frederick Kunz procured it for John Pierpont Morgan to be displayed at the 1900 Paris Exposition. It was later donated to the Museum of Natural History, where it remains — though it was stolen in October 1964 before being returned in January of 1965.

The Rockefeller Sapphire is an internally flawless blue stone weighing 62.02 carats, getting its name from one-time owner John D. Rockefeller Jr. The famous Rockefeller purchased the stone from an Indian maharajah in 1934.

The Logan Sapphire was mined in Sri Lanka during the 1900s before being purchased by Colonel M. Robert Guggenheim as a gift for his wife, Rebecca, in 1952. She ended up donating the stone to the Smithsonian. It received the name “Logan” after Rebecca’s new surname. This stone weighs in at 422.99 carats and is the largest set gem in the National Gem Collection.

Spiritual and mystical properties

Also known as the “stone of wisdom,” sapphire is believed to release mental tension, unwanted thoughts and spiritual confusion, restoring balance within the body and mind. It is believed that wearers of this gem are better able to focus, maintain self-discipline and channel higher powers. The deep blue color of the stone once symbolized heaven, attracting divine favor and wise judgement.

It’s always best to dress for the occasion. Attending a wedding? Wear a dress or a suit. Going to the office? A nice button-down does the job. Joining a Zoom meeting from the couch? Well… that’s where things get a bit tricky. Typical fashion rules get thrown out the window. A satin blouse paired with oversized sweatpants is perfectly acceptable — though at Shane Co., we at least suggest a nice set of earrings to balance out the sweatpants.

In this shoulder-up world, clothes have taken on an entirely different role. A complete, cohesive outfit is no longer a necessary component of a good first impression. There’s no need to stress over whether that top matches those bottoms, or which pair of shoes give off the right vibe. Rather, clothes are primarily for comfort. For so many of us lucky enough to work from home, as long as our upper bodies in that small square on the screen look put-together, it doesn’t matter that we’re still in the same pajama bottoms from the night before.

With this in mind, we at Shane Co. began to wonder: What will fashion look like when we finally resume our pre-pandemic routines?

We surveyed 1,843 Americans to find out how over a year in some form of COVID-19 lockdown affected personal outfit and jewelry choices, and what we can expect when we re-enter a post-lockdown world. Read on to see what we found!

The Impact of the COVID-19 Lockdown on Retail Clothing Businesses

Infographic depicting the impact of COVID on retail clothing businesses

It looks like many of us used the pandemic to refresh our closets. Retail clothing busIt looks like many of us used the pandemic to refresh our closets. Retail clothing businesses have seen a whopping 115.41% increase in sales since March 2020, even though 84.2% of people have dressed more casually while spending more time at home during lockdown. And, although nearly 34% of people have not purchased any new clothing or jewelry during the COVID-19 lockdown in the U.S., this means the other 66% of us did some serious retail therapy in 2020!

Infographic showing statistics on how style is changing after lockdown

We’re in the midst of a fashion revolution. TikTok tells us that side parts and skinny jeans are out, pushed aside by middle parts and mom jeans, but it turns out that over a year of lockdown has been a catalyst for other kinds of fashion trends. In fact, 37.3% feel that their personal style has changed due to the pandemic, and over 20% of people will not return to how they dressed before the pandemic. But what exactly does that shift look like?

Turns out, the hours spent chatting with others through a screen have taken a toll on personal fashion choices. More than half of people, 61.3%, will opt for comfortable clothes more regularly post-lockdown. Not only that, but nearly 40% have lowered their standards of what’s “acceptable” to wear since lockdown began. It seems safe to say that sweatpants and yoga pants will stick around for a little while longer — and we aren’t complaining about that!

Infographic depicting changing fashion trends during and after lockdown

If you didn’t spend your time at home staying up to date with the latest on-trend styles, you’re not alone. More than 70% of people did not keep up with fashion trends during lockdown. Despite this, a majority of people, 52%, think that clothes will play an important role in their confidence when returning to social gatherings, and 56.4% plan to buy new clothes specifically for going out post-lockdown. One thing is for certain, though: We’ll likely see less denim out and about, as 32.3% of people have just about sworn off jeans post-lockdown.

Infographic of how shopping habits have changed during lockdown

The pandemic forced most industries and communities to go virtual, and shopping habits have been no exception. Whether for convenience or personal safety, online shopping is here to stay. Over 60% of people report that they will purchase clothing online more post-lockdown. Moreover, nearly 33% have purchased clothing seen on social media during the last year of lockdown. For better or worse, without the internet, people would still be shopping old-school — in an actual store — and many would be without fashion inspiration from online influencers.

Here’s an unexpected twist: An exciting number of people plan to be bold with their outfit choices post-lockdown. More than 35% overall expect to get more experimental with their wardrobe, and over half (54.4%) of Gen Z plans on the same. We can’t wait to see what crazy choices this entails: Maybe we’ll emerge from the pandemic looking like residents of the Capitol in “The Hunger Games”!

Fashion styles, trends, and habits have all changed as a result of the last year of lockdown. But, one thing is certain: Shane Co.’s timeless jewelry will complement whatever outfit choices you make going into the post-lockdown world.

Half-moon necklace, signet ring, and gemstone earrings.

Summer is here! That also means love is in the air, and with flowers blooming, days getting longer, and the weather warming up, there are so many ways to take advantage of the changing seasons with your significant other.

Here are some fun summer date ideas, plus options for updating your jewelry wardrobe or giving as a special gift.

1. Play Tourist

Even if you’ve lived in your current city for a while, this is the perfect time of year to explore your surroundings, especially if you’re starting to venture out of the house more and more. Pick an area of town you’ve been wanting to check out, go on a bike ride, try a new-to-you restaurant, or hit up the main attractions and see who can find the cheesiest souvenir. This is a great way to get out and experience what your own city has to offer.

2. Take in a Ballgame

If you and your significant other are sports fans, or simply missed being able to spend an evening at the ballpark last year, a baseball game is an easy and fun date idea and a sign that summer has certainly arrived. Don’t forget the minor league teams! They not only make for a less expensive evening out, but often have fun giveaways, theme nights, and wacky entertainment.

3. Visit the Botanical Gardens

What better way to enjoy all that nature has to offer in summertime than by taking a romantic stroll through your local botanical garden or arboretum? Whether it’s a cool day or a pleasantly warm evening, there’s beauty to be found no matter when you go. Many gardens also offer fun events on their grounds throughout spring and summer, such as art exhibits, happy hours, outdoor concerts, and even opportunities to bring your dogs.

4. Hit the Farmers Market

A true hallmark of summer is the re-emergence of farmers markets. Head to your favorite one together or find a new one, and spend the afternoon together exploring the fresh, local goodies. Another fun idea: Have one person pick out a “secret ingredient” and have the other create a dish using that item when you get home, then switch off next time you visit the market.

5. Have a Date Night In…Outside

If you’d rather just stay home or don’t have time for a big night out, you can still enjoy the nice weather by taking things outside. Have a cookout with your farmers market finds, make it a campout complete with s’mores, or do a sunset happy hour — as long as you spend time together!

The only way to make a summer date even better? A gift of jewelry! Surprise your honey with something she’s been eyeing, or explore our selection and drop a hint (or treat yourself!). These are just a few of our favorite pieces perfect for warmer weather:

The June birthstone is a unique gem because it is the only one that is not actually a stone, since it’s formed within various species of freshwater and saltwater mollusks, rather than as minerals underneath the earth. Pearls’ feminine elegance makes them perfect to wear for any occasion, and their unique history makes them one of the most interesting gems in the world.

How are pearls made?

There are two types of real pearls: natural and cultured.

Natural pearls are very rare and valuable because they form at random in nature. When an irritant such as a parasite ends up inside an oyster, mussel or clam, the mollusk reacts by producing a fluid, which coats the irritant. This coating, called nacre, continues to build up layers until the pearl as we know it is created.

Cultured pearls are formed by the same process, but instead of randomly occurring in nature, pearl farmers implant a bead or piece of shell tissue into the mollusks. The mollusks are then suspended in salt water or fresh water while the pearls grow until they are harvested. The length of time to grow the pearls depends on the type of mollusk and the desired pearl size.

Are cultured pearls considered real pearls?

Yes. Cultured pearls have the same chemical makeup as natural pearls, in contrast to imitation pearls, which are made when a glass bead is dipped into a solution made from fish scales. This coating is much thinner than that of a real pearl and will eventually wear off. There are no physical differences between cultured and natural pearls and both will hold their value over time.

Did you know?

To convince Rome that Egypt possessed a wealth greater than its conquerors, Cleopatra made a bet with Mark Antony that she could host the most expensive dinner in history. She then crushed a large pair of pearl earrings into a cup and dissolved it in liquid, drinking it down to the last drop. Antony subsequently declined the dinner and admitted defeat to Cleopatra.

The unique history of pearls

While today it’s relatively easy to find real pearl jewelry that features the June birthstone at an affordable price, this wasn’t always the case. In fact, before the creation of cultured pearls in the early 1900s, pearls were so expensive and rare that only the very rich could afford them.

Humble beginnings

While we don’t know exactly who the earliest pearl collectors are, it’s been hypothesized by George Frederick Kunz, author of the 1908 publication “The Book of the Pearl,” that an ancient fish-eating tribe along the coast of India initially appreciated the appeal of pearls after discovering them from the oysters they consumed in their diet. India’s sacred books have many references to pearls, as do China’s long-recorded historical documents.

The first discovered oyster beds lay in the Persian Gulf along the coasts of India and current-day Sri Lanka as well as the Red Sea, but other centers for pearl cultivation, like Panama and Venezuela, were soon discovered. While Chinese pearls came mainly from freshwater rivers and ponds, Japanese pearls were found near the saltwater coasts. The rarity of pearls began to lessen when English colonizers discovered pearls in the riverbeds of Ohio, Mississippi and Tennessee. In fact, so many gems were exported to Europe that the New World gained the nickname “Land of Pearls.”

Did you know?

At the height of the Roman Empire, historian Suetonius wrote that the Roman general Vitellius financed an entire military campaign by selling just one of his mother’s pearl earrings.

The introduction of cultured pearls

In the 1800s, overfishing in Central and North America depleted oyster beds just as pollution began to set in from industrialization in the United States. This is where the story of cultured pearls begins.

Kokichi Mikimoto, the son of a noodle maker, and his wife, Ume, had dreams of discovering a way for oysters to produce pearls on demand. They weren’t aware that government biologist Tokichi Nishikawa and Tatsuhei Mise had already discovered the secret of pearl culturing.

Mise received a patent in 1907 for his grafting needle, which allowed one to insert an outside contaminant into the oyster’s mantle in order to form a pearl sac. When Nishikawa attempted to file the same patent, the two agreed to unite their common discovery and name it the Mise-Nishikawa method, which is still used today. Mikimoto then altered his technique to create a patent for creating round pearls. This allowed him to buy the rights to the Mise-Nishikawa method and begin his unprecedented expansion.

Myths and symbolism

Because they’ve been a popular gem for such a long time, there are a wide variety of myths and symbolism attached to the pearls. They are believed to be symbolic of wisdom gained through experience, offer protection, and attract wealth and good fortune to the wearer, as well as bring balance to one’s karma. Most notably, they are a symbol of purity and loyalty, making them a popular choice for brides on their wedding day.

It is believed that Eve’s tears created white pearls in the Garden of Eden, while Adam’s tears produced black pearls. This goes along with other religious legends, such as the one where the Hindu god Krishna discovers pearls from the sea and gives them to his daughter on her wedding day. In ancient Vedic texts, pearls are considered to be the “Daughter of the Moon” because of their similarity to the lunar structure. This also contributes to their association with feminine sensibilities.

How to care for your pearl jewelry

 • Wipe your pearls with a soft cloth after wearing them
 • Store your pearls separately from other jewelry in a slightly damp linen cloth
 • Don’t wear pearls with metal jewelry to avoid scratching
 • Wear your pearls regularly, as the natural oils in your body will maintain the pearls’ luster
 • Avoid contact with salt water, perspiration and chlorine
 • Never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner on your pearls

Why shop Shane Co. for pearl jewelry

Pearl necklaces

Like all of our other gems, Shane Co. cultured pearls come directly from the source. We offer high-quality freshwater, akoya, Tahitian and South Sea pearls in a wide range of colors to complement every skin tone and any woman’s personal style. It’s acceptable within the industry to knot between every third or fifth pearl, but we take extra care to prevent all the pearls from scratching each other by placing a knot between each one. This extra precaution also means that if your string breaks, the most you might lose is one pearl, rather than several. Individual knotting also ensures that your pearl strand will be more flexible, feel more comfortable, and conform to the body. Shop our entire pearl jewelry selection on our website, or visit us in-store to speak with one of our dedicated, noncommission jewelry consultants to learn more.

Choose a classic disk pendant for a simple, always on-trend design, or go for a bar necklace or locket in a variety of metal types and styles.

2. Choose a colorful charm

Our selection of gemstone charms is a gorgeous way to add a hint of color to your necklace. Curious what each of our charms means? See below to pick out the perfect one for you.

Garnet: Was often worn by royalty, perhaps because of its protective qualities.

These delicate charms are made with 14k gold and feature a row of sparkling diamonds in whichever initial you choose to wear. Like our other charms, they come in both 14k yellow and white gold, so you can choose dual-toned metals or stick to one color, whichever you prefer!

You’ve probably seen the bangle bracelet trend popping up on social media over the last few years — a gorgeously layered arm featuring sparkling, twinkling bracelets that perfectly mix and match. At Shane Co., we love bangle bracelets because they can be worn together or apart to create a unique look that goes with any outfit. Whether you’re dressing up for a fancy event or just looking to add a little glamour to your everyday T-shirt and jeans, bangle bracelets provide the perfect opportunity to show off your personal style.

What is the difference between a bangle and a bracelet?

Originating from the Hindi word “bangri,” meaning ring-shaped anklet, bangles actually have a long and interesting history. They’ve been depicted in artwork tracing back as far as 2600 B.C., usually made from a combination of materials like bronze, copper, and even decorative shells.

The main attribute that separates a bangle from a traditional bracelet is flexibility. While bracelets tend to contain chains or even rope or string so that they can be easily manipulated around the wrist, bangles are traditionally made of more solid metals and adhere to a solid shape, either soldered or linked together with a clasp at the end.

How do I style bangle bracelets?

There are many ways to style bangle bracelets, depending on your own personal taste! In many cultures, bangles are worn in groups — women can be adorned in anywhere from two to up to dozens of bangles, with similar or contrasting metals and designs. In fact, bangles are often gifted at baby showers because the sounds of the bracelets “clinking” together on a mother’s arm can be quite soothing to babies and young children.

Of course, you can also choose to style a bangle on its own, as a statement piece or as an everyday addition to your jewelry wardrobe. If you’d like to try stacking bangles, we recommend a few tips:

 • Play up color. Whether you’re choosing styles with colorful gemstones or different metal types, add a bit of color to your bracelet stack.
 • Choose contrast. Alternate the thickness and style of your bangles for an on-trend, one-of-a-kind look.
 • Add some sparkle. It’s no secret that we’re a fan of diamonds — and a little bit of sparkle will create a glittering stack that will perfectly accent your outfit.
 • Embrace your favorites. Choose one bangle that you absolutely love to wear, then work out what the rest of your stack will look like based on that staple piece.

The post Choosing the Right Necklace Length appeared first on The Loupe.

]]>

Choosing a necklace to wear with your outfit is one of the simplest ways to add drama, elegance, or a touch of style to any look. But what necklace length is right for you?

What is the most popular necklace length?

There really isn’t one most popular necklace length, since different lengths work best for different styles and outfits. Most necklaces range from a choker-style 14 to 16 inches to the longest reaching 22 inches, with sizes two inches between.

Which necklace length is right for me?

Choosing the right necklace length really depends on the neckline of your outfit and where you’d like it to fall on your neck. Read on for descriptions of each necklace length!

 • 16″ Necklace: This length will fall closely around the base of your neck like a collar. Depending on the size of your neck, it may act as a collar or more closely resemble a choker.
 • 18″ Necklace: This “in-between” size is a common choice for many women, sitting elegantly on the collarbone.
 • 20″ Necklace: A longer style, this necklace will fall just below the collarbone.
 • 22″ Necklace: Necklaces of this size will fall a few inches below the collarbone.
 • 24″ Necklace: Generally the longest size available, particularly in chain lengths, this necklace will fall at or just above the top of the bust.

How do I choose the right necklace length?

Picking out the perfect necklace comes down to evaluating a variety of factors, including:

 • The neckline of the outfit
 • Face shape
 • Body type
 • Personal taste

While a longer 22 necklace might look great with a turtleneck sweater dress, it may not look as elegant with a square or sweetheart neckline. At the same time, someone with a long, thin neck might prefer a choker style, while someone with wider shoulders might do well with a longer style. See below for some examples of how to choose the correct necklace length for your outfit.

 • Strapless: For strapless dresses or shirts, a choker-style necklace will work beautifully. Choose something between 14 and 16 inches to best take advantage of this style.
 • V-neck: Choose a chain that mimics the shape of your top — usually an 18- or 20-inch with a focal point on the pendant will work best here.
 • Low-cut: If you’re showing off a little more décolletage, an 18-inch necklace will showcase the style of your shirt by drawing the eye upward toward the shoulders.
 • Turtleneck or high crew: A 24-inch or longer necklace will stand out with a turtleneck or high crew, offering a bolder look and complementing the style of the neckline.
 • Halter or off-the-shoulder: We actually recommend forgoing a necklace for this style of shirt or dress, instead letting the neckline speak for itself and pairing with a pair of statement earrings or sparkling studs.

Ready to pick out the perfect necklace? You can shop necklaces of all lengths on ShaneCo.com, or book a virtual or in-store appointment with one of our expert jewelry consultants if you need help picking out the right necklace for you.

Whether you’re finally getting to see friends and family, taking a trip, or simply need a refresh, the fall months are the perfect time to take inventory on your jewelry wardrobe. Are you favoring on-trend styles and missing out on everyday staples? Want to brighten up your look, but not sure where to start? Don’t worry. These tips will help you give your jewelry collection a face-lift — just in time for the holiday season.

1. Don’t forget the classics

Woman wearing a gold hoop earring and a diamond stud earring.

With sweater weather coming up, there’s no doubt that the perfect way to accessorize is with your favorite classic styles. We recommend a pair of hoops to add a little drama to jeans and a sweater, or sparkling stud earrings for a subdued night-out look. Did you know that you can take advantage of our best-ever upgrade policy to upgrade to a bigger pair of studs later on? It’s the gift that keeps on giving!

2. Experiment with layers

Charm necklaces with engravable pendants.

The perfect personalized look can make or break a whole outfit. Building a customized layered look can add flair and personality to your style while creating a thoughtful, put-together silhouette. Try creating a charm necklace with our engravable pendants, then add letter or gemstone charms for more personalization. You can add or subtract to this look by layering on other delicate gold chains and pendants!

3. Make it easy with matching sets

Matching aquamarine pendant and earrings.

There’s no doubt about it: A pair of earrings and a matching necklace will make you look like the polished professional you are…even if you’re sporting sweatpants on your video meeting. Plus, they make a great gift for friends and family.

There’s no doubt about it: The chain is having a total moment right now. From celebrities like Gigi Hadid and Sophie Turner, to Connell’s iconic thin gold chain in Hulu’s Normal People (it even snagged its own Instagram account!), it’s been a bit of a renaissance for the classic chain necklace. But where did this trend come from, and why are we so obsessed with it? Get ready to do a deep dive, courtesy of your friends in the jewelry business.

The history of the chain necklace

Since ancient times, the chain has been used not only for practical purposes but also as symbolic jewelry among some of history’s most notorious elites. Its simplistic linked structure often represents the endless nature of love, connection, and infinity.

Some of the oldest chain relics were dated all the way back to 2500 B.C., from ancient Babylonia, where they were often buried in royal tombs along with their wearers. Like today, they were usually made from gold or silver and occasionally embellished with available beads, like lapis and carnelian. By the 8th century, the “strap” chain was invented, which connected strands of chain that lay side by side, developing into flexible, wearable adornments. The famous Leonardo da Vinci is actually credited with improving upon the design of the popular chain later on, when jewelry and other embellishments became increasingly popular among all classes of society.

As time went on, chains became useful not only for wearing on their own, but also for ornamenting with charms, pendants, and precious gemstones. They also had other uses; men’s chains were incredibly popular not only to wear around one’s neck, but also to hold onto pocket watches, add to belt loops, or create keychains with. The famous zoot suit was often worn with an extra-long chain, made popular by young men in metro areas like Chicago, Detroit, and Harlem during the 1940s.

Modern day popularity

Despite its popularity throughout history, the chain really took off during the 1980s. With the introduction of music styles like hip hop and R&B, trendsetters (particularly men) took to wearing large and even exaggerated chains. It maintained its popularity throughout the 1990s, where wearers sometimes added on large crosses, diamond pendants, and even symbols like skulls or letters. The introduction of punk culture also brought forth the use of chains for wallets, belt loops, bracelets, and more.

Where are we now?

With the necklace layering trend still maintaining its popularity, chains are more “in” than ever before. Large, bulky chains serve as the perfect statement piece for men and women, while thin, delicate chains can be layered with other styles or worn alone to add a little flair to a simple T-shirt and jeans. The chain’s popularity may very well be in part due to its versatility — no matter what style you love, there’s most likely a chain for you!

Woman opening a gift box.

Ah, weddings – whether you’re attending in person or as a virtual guest, they’re fun, romantic, tear-worthy….and (sometimes) expensive. Even when you’re not the bride or groom, the cost of attending a wedding can add up. From finding the right attire to extracurriculars like engagement parties and bridal showers, wedding guests can end up spending a big chunk of change on their friends’ or family’s nuptials – especially if you managed to snag a coveted spot in the wedding party. So, what’s the right amount to spend on a wedding gift? And does it differ from case to case?

To start, let’s admit that shopping for a wedding gift has gone through some tremendous changes in the past few decades. While many couples still opt for a gift registry, some are asking for cash gifts to support a new home investment or honeymoon, while others are forgoing gifts entirely, instead asking for charitable donations on the couple’s behalf. Here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for your next wedding gift:

1. Weddings are expensive

One important thing to remember when finding the right wedding present is that this simply isn’t the only expense you’ll incur by attending this wedding. In fact, according to a survey by NerdWallet, 33% of Americans say they’ve “skipped or considered skipping a wedding because [they] couldn’t afford to attend,” with the highest number of millennials (41%) admitting to this financial burden. In fact, nearly 2 in 5 Americans say they typically use a credit card to cover wedding-related costs, with 1 in 10 millennials stating they borrow money from their parents to take care of expenses.

2. Keep it personal

The old adage of spending as much on a wedding gift as the couple spends per head on the wedding is simply no longer applicable (if it ever was!). Even if you could figure out exactly how much the bride and groom spent on their guests, a wedding is not an exchange or something that needs to be reimbursed by those attending. The budget for your wedding gift should be far more dependent on your personal finances and how much you are willing to spend. You should by no means have to go into major debt so that your bestie can get the new Vitamix they have listed on their registry. Instead, we recommend spending something in the range of the “average” wedding gift: $113 to $180.

3. Count your attendance

If you’re bringing a date to the wedding, you’re going to want to spend a little more on your wedding gift, simply because there’s two of you instead of one. The bride and groom have been generous enough to host the both of you, so it only makes sense to reciprocate. The same goes for those bringing their kids to the event.

4. Think about your relationship

Is the person getting married a close friend, or just an acquaintance? Your nearest and dearest, or an old college buddy that you maybe aren’t so close with anymore? Your relationship with the bride and/or groom is certainly valid to take into consideration when deciding how much you’d like to spend on a gift. If the wedding is for someone you’re super close with, take a little time in advance to budget for a gift that you know they’ll love.

5. What about cash?

While most Americans still prefer to give traditional gifts (an average of 52% consider giving cash gifts “tacky”), that doesn’t mean that you can’t forgo the registry for a honeymoon or cash contribution – especially if it’s what the happy couple is asking for!

6. Anything is better than nothing

If you end up not being able to make it to the wedding, decide you don’t want to go, or are attending virtually, it’s still good etiquette to send a gift – or at least a card. If the reason you’re skipping is financial, try doing something personal like gifting a framed photo of the couple or some homemade treats. The old saying still rings true: it’s the thought that counts!

Interested in buying a sapphire but don’t know where to start? You’ve come to the right place! We’re famous for our superior sapphires in more than a dozen colors. (That’s right, they’re not just blue!) So sit back and relax while we school you on these beautiful stones.

What are sapphires?

Sapphires are a precious gemstone in the corundum family. They’re most known for being blue, but actually come in an incredible range of colors.

Sapphires are also a great choice for engagement rings. You can select a favorite color and create a unique, one-of-a-kind look. Sapphires are also very durable (9 on the Mohs scale of hardness), which means you don’t have to worry about damaging them with everyday wear. And last but not least, sapphires are more affordable than diamonds, which means you can get a bigger center stone for your budget!

Does Shane Co. carry sapphires?

Yes! We’re famous for the superior quality of our sapphires. Tom Shane travels to Bangkok, the gemstone capital of the world, throughout the year to hand-select each sapphire. The stones are then cut to his exacting specifications to maximize their beauty.

Tom’s always on the hunt for the most vibrant colors. In fact, we have over a dozen colors of sapphires — more than any other jeweler — including: Kentucky blue, ice blue, blue-green, green, yellow, peach, pink, raspberry, salmon, fire, orange, lavender, cognac, black, and even white.

How to buy sapphires

1. Set your budget

It’s important to determine how much you want to spend before you start shopping. This will help you narrow down your choices and make you feel comfortable about this important purchase. The old adage to spend three-months salary on your ring really doesn’t stand. It has to do with your personal finances, and you’re the only one who can figure out how much you want to spend.

But did you know? At Shane Co., you can always upgrade the center stone later, and only pay the difference from what you originally paid.

2. Pick a setting

The setting is the foundation for your ring, and really sets the tone. Our jewelry consultants can help you choose the perfect setting by chatting about your significant other’s style and interests. Would she prefer something classic like a solitaire setting, or is she a vintage-lover who’d like something a little more ornate? Is bling her thing? A halo engagement ring accentuates the center stone and really makes it pop.

Pro tip: Just want to get a ready-to-go ring? Our Perfectly Preset Engagement Ring styles also come with sapphires!

3. Choose a stone shape

Once you land on a setting, we can help you pick the perfect stone to match. Round stones are by far the most popular, and the most versatile. They’re classic and timeless. Another shape that’s on the rise in popularity is oval. You can also choose princess, cushion, pear, emerald, or radiant. You really can’t go wrong — it’s all about preference.

4. Compare similar stones

Whether you’re in one of our stores or shopping online, the next step is to compare stones. On our site you can narrow them down by shape, carat, price, and stone type. We have incredibly high-quality photos of the stones so it’s like you’re viewing them in person. Another option is to compare stones under a loupe at one of our stores. When you find the one, you just know!

Now that you’re an expert on sapphires, you can get started by creating an engagement ring online, browsing stones, or setting up an online or in-store appointment with a jewelry consultant.

Aquamarine and Diamond Ring and Emerald-Cut Aquamarine Studs.

Summer is coming, which means it’s the perfect time for a jewelry wardrobe update! We decided to do a deep dive on one of our favorite warm-weather trends: sparkling aquamarine and diamond jewelry.

Why aquamarine?

A known favorite stone of Meghan Markle’s, aquamarine has long been associated with the sea because of its calming blue color. Its name is even derived from the Latin word for “seawater,” making it a beautiful piece to wear with summer-friendly whites, blues, and pastel shades. Its durability and affordable price point make it great for everyday wear, while its unique sparkle means it will shine bright for special occasions. Psst — we recommend an aquamarine piece for your “something blue” on your wedding day!

The latest trends

While aquamarine jewelry is gorgeous on its own, we absolutely love how it looks when it’s paired with diamond accents. The sparkle of our high-quality Shane Co. diamonds accentuates aquamarine’s light-reflecting qualities, creating a high-end piece that’s not quite as expensive as diamonds alone. Check out some of our favorites below!

Aquamarine and Diamond Three-Stone Ring.

A Young Daughter Plays With Her Mother's Necklace

In the United States and across the world, we celebrate Mother’s Day, where we take a day in May to honor our matriarchs and thank them for everything they do for us. But how did this tradition originate? And how can you make this Mother’s Day the best one yet?

Where does Mother’s Day come from?

The tradition of honoring mothers is nothing new. Celebrations of motherhood can be traced as far back as to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses, Rhea and Cybele. The earliest known incarnations after that include the Christian festival “Mothering Sunday,” which fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and encouraged the faithful to return to their “mother church” for a special service.

Over time, this shifted into a more secular holiday where children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity as American Mother’s Day became a national holiday, all but disappearing in the 1930s and ’40s.

Mother’s Day in the United States of America

Husband and Wife Embracing

Mother’s Day as we know it in the U.S. dates back all the way to the 19th century, when Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia started “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” to teach mothers how to care for their children. These clubs became a unifying force in a region of the country that was, at the time, still divided over the Civil War. In 1868, Jarvis organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day,” where mothers could gather with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation. Even back then, mothers played peacemaker to their large families in the United States.

Another precursor to Mother’s Day came from suffragette and abolitionist Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation” in 1870. She asked for mothers to unite in promoting world peace and campaigned for a “Mothers Peace Day” to be celebrated every June 2. While her idea didn’t exactly catch on, it led the way for the versions of Mother’s Day that followed.

Becoming a national holiday

The official celebration of Mother’s Day arose in the 1900s because of Anna Jarvis, the daughter of Anne Reeves Jarvis. After her mother’s death in 1905, Anna came up with Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers make for their children. She gained financial backing from a Philadelphia department store owner named John Wanamaker and, with his help, in May of 1908 she organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. At the same time, thousands of people celebrated the new holiday at a Wanamaker’s retail store in Philadelphia.

Jarvis’ idea was so successful that she started a letter-writing campaign to urge the adoption of Mother’s Day as an official holiday. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Ironically enough, Jarvis remained unmarried and childless throughout her life — but this didn’t stop her from recognizing the importance of mothers in cultures all over the world.

Fun facts about Mother’s Day

Surprise Mom with these interesting facts you may not have known about this important holiday.

 • The original Mother’s Day involved wearing a white carnation as a badge in addition to visiting one’s mother and attending church services. White carnations are still a popular choice for Mother’s Day flowers, while colorful pink ones are given as well.
 • In the 1970s, women’s groups often protested on Mother’s Day to highlight the need for equal rights and access to childcare.
 • Approximately 122 million calls are made to moms on Mother’s Day in the U.S. How’s that for a phone bill?
 • In 1968, Coretta Scott King, the wife of Martin Luther King Jr., used Mother’s Day to host a march in support of underprivileged women and children.
 • More fresh flowers and plants are purchased on Mother’s Day than for any other holiday except Christmas/Hanukkah.

The Shane Co. team has some fun with silly hats!

From constant Slack communications to seeing the inside of your boss’s home, recent events have forced many of us to embrace a landscape where working from home is the “new normal.” While it can be tempting to put on the same pair of sweats every day (and, trust us, we don’t blame you if you haven’t done laundry in weeks), getting ready for the work day can offer a sense of normalcy and calm in an otherwise constantly changing world. Here are some of our recommendations for how to look your best in all your virtual meetings.

1. Dress from the waist up

No surprise here: Your coworkers are more likely to see just your top half when you’re signing in on Zoom. Now’s the perfect time to experiment with pretty necklines and cozy-yet-cute tops to show off in all your meetings.

2. Invest in a pair of hoops

Nothing says “casual chic” like a classic pair of hoops. Since your face is getting a little extra (virtual) attention, rock a pair of delicate huggies or complement a plain white tee with a bigger, eye-catching pair. Need recommendations? See below for our favorites.

Hoop Earrings in 14k Yellow Gold
Hoop Earrings With Diamond Accent
14k Rose Gold Hoop Earrings

3. Design a skincare routine

Even if you’re forgoing your regular makeup favorites for a more bare-faced look, now is the perfect time to invest in an ongoing skincare routine. Give your face a breather from full-faced coverage and allow it to heal. A good dose of moisturizer and a little bit of highlighter is a gorgeous go-to for your webcam meetings.

4. Go for a statement necklace

This one rings true especially if you’re opting for more simple earrings. Try a unique necklace to draw attention to your face and offer a put-together look…even if you don’t feel very put-together. Here are a few styles to try:

Layered Necklace in Sterling Silver
Sapphire and Diamond Twisted Circle Pendant
Marquise London Blue Topaz Teardrop Pendant

5. Make eye contact

It can be easy to get distracted by the collection of faces on the screen during a video call. The best way to maintain professionalism? Maintain eye contact as best you can with whoever is speaking. This will not only help you pay better attention to what’s being said, but will also force you to show off your most flattering angle.

6. Rely on your favorite pieces

Like comfort food, a sentimental pendant, sparkling engagement ring, or well-loved pair of studs can help to bring your whole look together, while making you feel more confident in any professional scenario. Lean on your classic faves to bring a little familiarity to a crazy time. You can shop online at ShaneCo.com to find the perfect pair of studs, a simple diamond necklace, or a new band to add to your wedding stack.

Stuck at home? Now’s the perfect time to experiment with jewelry. Even if you’re only communicating on webcam, you can still rock your favorite pieces — in fact, a good pair of earrings can pull together your whole look! Shane Co. has created these helpful graphics to show you how to find the right ones for your face shape.

How to find your face shape

Knowing your face shape can help you figure out what haircut to get, how to apply makeup, and even what jewelry to wear to best flatter your face. You can determine your face shape by measuring the following parts of your face:

 • Forehead width
 • Cheekbone width
 • Jawline width
 • Face length

Next, consider facial features like the sharpness of your jawline and cheekbones. Finally, compare your face shape and dimensions to other recognizable faces.

Round

Round face shapes

Popular round-shaped celebrities include: Selena Gomez

Attributes of a round face: rounded forehead, rounded jawline, width of face same or similar to length of face.

With a round face shape, your go-to should be styles that help to elongate your gentle curves. Try square earrings, which juxtapose nicely with your circular face, or go for long dangle styles that will draw the eye downward.

Heart

Heart face shapes

Popular heart-shaped celebrities: Kourtney Kardashian

Attributes of a heart-shaped face: Forehead is wider than jawline; narrow, pointed jawline; face slightly longer than it is wide; cheekbone width same or similar as forehead width.

Romantic heart shapes can choose from a wide variety of styles because of their unique shape. We recommend trying triangular studs to add dimension, as well as avoiding earrings that hit above your jawline. They will accentuate your angular chin, rather than soften it.

Oval

Oval face shapes

Popular oval-shaped celebrities: Beyonce

Attributes of an oval shaped face: Width of forehead smaller than cheekbones, no sharp angles, face is longer than it is wide.

Our gorgeous oval ladies can show off their elegant face shape with any number of designs. Try out some wide dangle earrings to create a rounder silhouette, or experiment with classic hoops for a no-fail style you can wear every day.

Pear

Pear face shapes

Popular pear-shaped celebrities: Minnie Driver

Attributes of a pear-shaped face: Cheekbones and jaw are wider than forehead, forehead is narrowest part of face.

Pear-shaped faces deserve a little extra love up top to even out your silhouette. Put on some colorful studs to draw attention upward, or switch it up with uniquely shaped studs for a more playful look.

Diamond

Diamond face shapes

Popular diamond-shaped celebrities: Anna Kendrick

Attributes of a diamond-shaped face: Width of forehead smaller than cheekbones; narrow, pointed chin; length of face same or similar as width.

Lovely diamond face shapes can gravitate toward statement earrings that show off your unique shape. We also recommend avoiding larger earrings that land close to your ear — this style may create the illusion of a “shorter” face.

Square

Square face shapes

Popular square-shaped celebrities: Demi Lovato

Attributes of a square-shaped face: Forehead is same or similar width as jawline; minimal curves in cheekbones; strong, squared jaw.

For square face shapes, elegant hoops will add softness to your angular shape, while earrings that hit right at your jawline may accentuate those hard angles. Go for round shapes and soft silhouettes for the most flattering look.

Find the perfect earrings for your face shape by shopping all of Shane Co.’s unique styles on ShaneCo.com. From classic studs to on-trend threader earrings, we have the largest selection of sparkling 14k gold and sterling silver designs, studded with our hand-picked stones.

St. Patrick’s Day is coming up, and that means an excuse to wear one of our favorite colors: green! Are you curious about the origins of some of these famous St. Patrick’s Day trends? Read on to learn more.

Why we wear green on St. Patrick’s Day

Legend has it that St. Patrick used a green three-leafed shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to his pagan friends. While this story has never been fully confirmed, another tale in Irish mythology confirms the relationship of green to Ireland’s history.

In this story, Goidel Glas, creator of the Gaelic languages, is bitten by a snake and saved by Moses placing his staff on the snakebite. A green mark remained on him, helping him to lead his people to a land free of snakes (and, they thought, danger). In fact, the anglicized word “Gaelic” is actually the Irish word for green.

From then on, green ribbons and shamrocks were worn on St. Patrick’s Day, dating back to at least the 1680s.

The history of the Claddagh

Another commonly seen Irish tradition is the popular Claddagh ring. This piece of jewelry contains a heart with a crown being held by two hands, with each of these symbols representing something different. The hands represent friendship, with the heart signifying love and the crown being associated with loyalty.

This unique ring is thought to have originated in the small fishing village of Claddagh in Galway, Ireland. Legend says that Richard Joyce, a silversmith, was captured and enslaved while on a passage to the West Indies and sold to a goldsmith, where he then learned the art. When he was finally released and returned, he brought with him a ring he had fashioned while enslaved and gave it to his sweetheart. In fact, his initials are carved into one of the earliest known Claddagh rings.

It’s no secret that we’re crazy about diamonds. But did you know we offer many other popular gems, too? From rubies and sapphires to blue topaz, amethyst and more, there’s no shortage of sparkling gems at Shane Co.

Of course, of all the beautiful gems out there, few are more personally meaningful than those that represent one’s birth month. With this in mind, we decided to dedicate a study to birthstones. We used the latest CDC natality data to determine how many people are born each month in every state. From there, we determined the most common and rarest birthstones across the country. Additionally, we used our gemstone prices to determine which states have the most expensive birthstones of all.

As for each month’s designated birthstone, we used the most commonly accepted combinations, as shown in the key below.

Table showing the birthstones for each month.

Curious to see where your birthstone fell on the map? Read on!

The Most Common Birthstones in Every State

U.S. map showing the most common birthstones in every state.

In terms of the most common birthstones across the country, peridot, August’s official birthstone, ruled the map. Notably, this gorgeous green gem is the top stone in California, New York, and 38 states in between.

After peridot, emerald (May) and ruby (July) are the second and third most common birthstones, accounting for a total of eight states.

Sapphire, September’s official birthstone, is the most common birthstone in New Mexico and North Dakota, while October’s opal reigns supreme in Delaware.

U.S. map showing the cost of the most common birthstone in each state.

So, which states have the priciest birthstones? If you know anything about the cost of precious gemstones, you won’t be surprised to learn that, at a whopping $3,000 per carat, the ruby states (Nebraska, Vermont, and Washington) take the cake. Although diamond is typically regarded as the most expensive birthstone, April babies did not show up as the most popular in any of the U.S. states.

At a cost of $1,750 per carat, the sapphire states (New Mexico and North Dakota) aren’t too far behind.

Fortunately for most people, at only $195 per carat, the most common birthstone in the country, peridot, won’t break the bank.

U.S. map showing the second most common birthstone in each state.

Given that there are an overwhelming number of August birthdays in America, we decided to look into the second most common birthstone in every state, too. Interestingly, the priciest birthstone on our birthstone cost map also happens to be the second most common birthstone in a grand total of 19 states.

The Least Common Birthstone in Every State

U.S. map showing the rarest birthstone in each state.

Wondering which birthstone is rarest? In this category, amethyst won the majority of states — 38 to be exact. Needless to say, if you were born in February, you should feel pretty special. February babies have the rarest birthstone of all.

Diamond (April) is the rarest birthstone in a total of six states, while topaz (November) is the rarest birthstone in Montana, Wyoming, and Rhode Island. Emerald (May), sapphire (September), and pearl (June) are the rarest birthstones in Texas, Washington, and Utah, respectively.

The Most Common Birthstones in the U.S.

Table showing the most common birthstones in the U.S.

To summarize, peridot is the most common stone in the country by an impressive 35-state margin. Though they may try, the other stones simply can’t compete. Which is probably for the best, given that it’s one of the more affordable birthstones out there. If you’re hoping for jewelry that includes your birthstone, check out our gemstone jewelry to find the perfect match. Or, build a ring from the stone up by shopping for our gemstone engagement rings.

Now that you have the scoop on all things birthstone-related, why not let your friends join in the fun? How does the commonality of your birthstone compare to those in your social circle? It can be challenging trying to find the right gift for a loved one on Valentine’s Day. After all, how can a material item express everything you feel about a person? Giving a personal gift of jewelry can help you say what words often can’t – that your significant other holds the ultimate place in your heart. Here are a few reasons why we believe jewelry makes the perfect Valentine’s Day gift.

1. Because it lasts forever

Flowers wilt and clothes wear out, but high-quality jewelry from Shane Co. will withstand the test of time. Not only do gorgeous gold, diamonds, rubies and other gems stay in style no matter the season, our Free Lifetime Warranty guarantees they’ll remain just as beautiful as the day you bought them – for free, for life.

2. Because it holds more meaning

With jewelry, you can truly say how you’re feeling. Whether that means choosing a necklace highlighting their favorite color sapphire or birthstone, personalizing their piece with a sweet engraving, or using our comprehensive upgrade policy to surprise her with a sparkling update on her diamond, there are so many ways to say “I love you” with jewelry.

3. Because it makes a memory

Every time your loved one wears their gift, they’ll be brought back to the moment it was given to them. Jewelry creates moments unlike any other gift, because of its lasting power and unique ability to reflect the feelings of both the person giving and the one receiving. It’s one of the reasons why engagements rings have such a huge impact and it’s used to mark many other important milestones like weddings, anniversaries and holidays.

4. Because it’s generational

One of the most interesting things about jewelry is its ability to be passed down from generation to generation. What may begin as a thoughtful gift to your love could end up being a well-worn piece that’s given to a child, grandchild, niece, relative or friend.

5. Because you know they’ll love it

There’s no guessing when it comes to giving Shane Co. – you know you’re getting a meaningful, high-quality gift that they’ll love to wear. And if you’re not sure what to choose, our style finder quiz will help you pick out the perfect gift for your sweetheart.

Convinced yet? This year, when you purchase a Valentine’s Day gift from Shane Co., you’ll also get free chocolate truffles and a card for you to fill out with a special message. It’s everything you need for the most romantic Valentine’s Day ever.

There’s no doubt about it: Everyone loves a statement piece. But if you’ve ever been confused after hearing the term “cocktail ring,” don’t worry — we’re here to help.

What is a cocktail ring?

This standout piece of jewelry usually contains a larger-than-average focal point, such as a gemstone, with unique colors and shapes that create a statement look. They can be worn on any finger, though usually not the one reserved for an engagement or wedding ring. In their original incarnation, cocktail rings featured large center stones that were surrounded by accent gems, though this traditional definition has grown to include other styles over the years.

Why is it called a cocktail ring?

The history of the cocktail ring goes all the way back to the prohibition era of the 1920s. When alcohol was banned, illegal cocktail parties became the norm. This was also a period of social change, when women were beginning to enjoy greater freedom. Translated into fashion, this meant short skirts, short hair, flapper styles and greater spending power for females. The appearance of “gaudy” statement pieces and Art Deco jewelry was a way of expressing one’s personal style that was previously frowned upon. And with so many parties and events to attend, no one needed an excuse to show off their favorite pieces!

Are cocktail rings expensive?

Though prices can vary greatly in terms of the types of cocktail rings available, generally speaking, lower-priced gemstones are often used to great effect in today’s ring styles. This gives customers the opportunity to showcase oversized, colorful gems without the hefty price tag that can come along with diamond statement jewelry. As always, price also depends on the quality of materials being used — though it may cost a little more to use a high-quality gold, silver, or platinum, there’s less chance of unpleasant skin reactions and a greater chance of your ring lasting for years to come.

Our favorite styles

Shane Co. has a wide selection of stylish cocktail rings, with more being added all the time. Try out some of our favorite styles below.

We all love the look of sparkly ring stack – but it can be tricky to create the perfect one. Luckily, your friend in the jewelry business is here to help.

Engagement ring stacks

Sure, one diamond ring is gorgeous…but two is always better than one. Adding a band to your engagement ring and wedding stack can create a stand-out look that allows you to add some extra bling to your ring finger. Plus, a new band to stack is a great anniversary or birthday gift (psst – you can drop a hint on your favorite styles on ShaneCo.com!).

To create an Instagram-worth engagement ring stack, try pairing different but similar metals with different styles of rings. Check out the videos below for examples.

For our white gold stack, we paired this stunning Vintage Knife Edge Solitaire Ring featuring an emerald-cut diamond with this Baguette & Round Diamond Wedding Band and this Pavé-Set Diamond Wedding Band in 14k White Gold. The result? Sparkling, modern designs that create a cohesive look.

For our rose gold stack, we chose this stunning Solitaire Engagement Ring with an oval diamond center stone, paired with this Classic Pavé-Set Diamond Wedding Band and this Vintage Diamond Wedding Band. This creates a unique vintage-inspired stack in our signature shade of blush-toned rose gold.

Right-hand ring stacks

Of course, you don’t need to be rocking an engagement ring to pull off a sophisticated stack. The trick to pairing up right-hand rings? Get creative! Mix and match metals, styles, heights and more to create something totally original. The more contrast you can create, the more interesting the ring stack will appear on your finger.

For this stack, we paired a Diamond Cluster Wedding Band in 14k Yellow Gold with this Round Diamond Band in 14k White Gold, a Pavé-Set Baguette Diamond Wedding Band and this Oval & Round Diamond Cluster Band in 14k Rose Gold.

For a more delicate stack, try this: pair our Diamond Criss-Cross Wedding Band with this Vintage Wedding Band, this Diamond Wedding Band in Rose Gold with Pave Setting and that gorgeous Pavé-Set Baguette Diamond Wedding Band.

Multi-finger stacks

Want to add allure by wearing your rings on a few fingers? Create this contemporary look by pairing thin, similar rings in different sizes according to how you wish to wear them.

To recreate this look, pair our 14k Yellow Gold Wedding Band with this 14k Rose Gold Wedding Band. You can also stack a band with some diamonds to add a little more sparkle.

Want to try out this trend? Send your ring stacks to socialshane@gmail.com or message us on Facebook or Instagram to see if your look will be featured on our feed!
